Initial pain on latching - is this ok?

Forgive me if this is a basic question, but I'm still learning at this BFing lark!

DS2 is now 6 days old and BFed on demand (although he tends to feed for 30 min then sleep for about 2 hours). He's gaining well (7lb 14 at birth, 8lb 2 yesterday) and has yellow poo and plenty of wet nappies.

However, since my milk came in on Wed and I've been quite engorged I've noticed an initial sharp pain when he latches, (sometimes a shooting pain and sometimes a pinch) which eases after 1-2 min for a gentle tug. I have quite sensitive skin so don't know if my nipples are just adjusting or if I need someone to look at his latch. I have expressed off a little before feeds to get comfortable but don't want to do this every time as I find it makes me quite sore.

Can anyone ease my mind or offer advice?

it's only for a few days - I used to count backwards in 3s from 97 or so just to distract myself. It'll soon settle.

And congratulations! x

Ta Bramble, I only managed to feed DS1 for 8 weeks so really keen to go for longer this time and don't want to get into bad habits!

Happened to me too - I asked my MW about it and she said that an initial wince as they start is very normal in young babies. Mine went away as DD1 got older.
