Recurrent blocked ducts

Can anyone advise? Have been getting blocked ducts for about 8 weeks now and getting to the end of my tether...
DD is 21 weeks and up until last week EBF (have now introduced one FF). I have milk blisters on both nipples which don't seem to go away and they periodically get blocked every couple of days. It really hurts, both the blockage when it occurs but also the latching on - it is like going back to the first two weeks. Also get shooting pains in the affected breast. Am sad as BF DD1 with no problems, and this is getting me down! Any advice?

Bumping for you, my dd3 is 16 weeks old and I've been getting milk blisters for a few weeks too and they are so sore. I'm sure a wise mumsnetter will be along shortly to help us out..

I'm no expert (nor very wise) but know blocked ducts are very unpleasant.
I found the following things helpful (sorry not sure what made the difference but maybe a combination of all):
-trying different feeding positions (with babes chin pointing towards blockage)
-soaking in a warm bath, lying on front if possible
-ibuprofen (x2 3times a day for a couple of days as long as you don't have any stomach problems)
-avoid any suspect bras / clothing which might be causing pressure on ducts

kellymom may have more helpful info

Hope you get sorted very soon

are they always in the same place?
do you think it might be your bra?

rainrain · 28/02/2009 08:29

Thanks for the replies. Yes always in the same places, top of left breast and bottom of right one! I know they are directly linked to the milk blisters as when they 'break' then the blockage clears. I have been finding hot showers, graib bags from hot 'teddies' and as a final measure popping blister with sterile needle (as saw on kellymom) gets rid of it.

It could be the bra's - although I wear a range of different ones. Will try the ibruprofen and new bra perhaps....

I really just wish they would stop getting blocked in the first place! And the rest of the pain in between really spoils the experience

Thanks for ideas
