OK weaning off BF at 9.5 months - what to expect?

OK, I've really had enough of BF with ds2. Hes 9.5 months, I never intended to BF longer than around 6 months but he is allergic to dairy and so the original plan to wean him onto formula kind of fell through and I ended up carrying on whilst on a dairy free diet myself. However, I am a scientist and regularly need to handle lots of nasties in the lab (avoided so far, but colleagues will only accept this for so long) and apart from that I just want my body back. He currently has around 5-6 feeds (5/6am, 9am, 12pm, 5pm, 8pm and sometimes one during the night) per 24 hours plus 3 solid meals and 2 small snacks. He does not drink any other liquid since every time we give him water with meals he brngs back his entire meal. The thing is, I understand all the stuff about drop one feed at a time, wean straight onto a cup not a bottle etc etc and this is all fine and well, but whenever I offer a cup of the hypoallergenic formula he only ever seems to take 1-2oz if I try to get him to have more he has a temper tantrum, but I know he takes more with breastfeeds because if I try to weight before/after feeds he almost consistantly takes around 4oz per feed.

If I persevere, will the amount he takes increase or am I leaving him to get dehydrated? Also his weight gain is very poor and I am paranoid about it getting worse or him starting to loose weight but if he starts to take less milk per feed I assume he will start to loose weight? What is the experience of others?

Cheers
