I have a Philips Avent Express steriliser and its not working properly. It is clicking off too soon so the bottles are not done.

How long do i boil them in a saucepan of water for to sterilise them and once they are done how long will they stay sterile for?

Please help DS due to wake up really soon xx

got a dishwasher? - That will sterilise bottles.

or half fill with water and whizz in the microwave for couple of minutes. Lid off. teats etc in a separate bowl of water.

Imagine you're on a desert island, what would you do?? Boil ten mins? nothing is strictly sterile as soon as air hits it.

I used to make up the sterilised bottles with boiled water, put in the fridge then add powder as and when I needed them throughout the day.

It may be that you don't need to sterlise - see this thread where someone with premature babies was advised not to, and see what you think:

Hope that helps!

Kbear powder is not only not sterile but can contain harmful bacteria which needs to be killed with very hot water.

CherryChoc · 22/02/2009 22:06

Boil for 5 minutes.

How old is your LO?

nicm · 22/02/2009 22:06

boiling in a pan for 10 mins should be grand. this is what i did with expressing machine and bottles and ds is ok!

Mintyy · 22/02/2009 22:09

Well, I didn't possess a steriliser but I occassionally gave my dcs bottles.

I boiled for about 3 or 4 mins iirc. I'm sure 10 minutes is longer than needed.

Thanks ladies.
Ds is 7 weeks old but 4 weeks prem.
Will boil them for a while.
By the way i always add the powder to a few oz's of just boiled water to kill bacteria then top up with the correct amount of cooled boiled water.

The info given to me said boil for 10 minutes. Make sure everything's under the water with no air bubbles (weigh down with a plate or something)

Mine has been doing the same. Looked on Avent website and it says it needs descaling - done it today and its working fine now.

snowlight - christ, good job none of my kids died from this method of bottle preparation then.

SnowlightMcKenzie · 23/02/2009 21:51

Kbear It is rare but real risk I'm afraid.
