Hello
I've just stopped b/feeding dd (more her choice actually - bit gutted meself)
anyhoo - now i would really apperciate some advice on how to prepare formula feeds...

can you:

a) prepare all feeds fresh in the morning cool down, fridge then re-heat?

b) prepare all water put in fridge, then add powder/microwave when needed?

c) prepare some water (say 4oz) leave in fridge then freshly make up 2oz of milk with powder & add to cold water -mix and away you go ( eg. for a 6oz bottle)

I can't be doing with waiting 1/2 hour for the kettle to cool down -with a hungry baby??? - she would NOT be pleased!

Also, night feeds? ... what does everyone do? (I slept with a ready made and a sterile bottle beside me last night) but I still think I've got some milk as I just popped her on and she seemed fine

Also - will my milk go completely, or can I still pop her on ze boob at night?
I was hoping to feed her at morning/night for at least a year - but knew formula was inevitable, as i return to work full time in 2 months. She really doesn't want my bm any more tho (even EBM in a bottle!)

I'd also like to point out that I am not in any way against using formula ... I just LOVE(D) breast feeding her ...

any advice much appreciated

there was another thread on same thing -think balance of thinking was c was best that said loads of people did a (as was ok til advice changed) and came to no harm.

and as for milk at night not much help here ( i went to ff from mixed feeding quite early and used to use cartons for night feed)... maybe tiktok or someone can help re keeping supply up.

thread here making up feeds

poppy34 · 18/02/2009 15:22

btw couple of friends have just gone down to feed at night and seems to be going ok - they exclusively bf on demand for 7 months tho and its early days but seems to work ok

As far as I am aware it's not advised to make up a batch of feeds in the morning, refrigarate and then reheat. Also I think the formula must be made up with hot water of at least 70 degrees in order for the feed to be safe as powdered formula isnt sterile.

thanks poppy34 have just skimmed other thread - am off to read it properly now (dunno how i missed it? - prob coz was searching under combined feeding)

so far flask idea looking promising

how do i get in touch with tiktok?

The way I did it was to make up each feed fresh with boiling water from the kettle. Then quickly cool the feed under the cold water tap.

Approx 3 mins for the kettle to boil, 2 mins to make the feed up then 2-3 mins to cool it.

daisyblue · 18/02/2009 16:12

thanks all !

can i ask another (daft) question - does she need water now too?

I did daytime ones by boiling the kettle, waiting half an hour, making up individual bottles, and then using about half an hour later (when they'd cooled sufficiently to drink) BUT both my dcs were really predictable with when they'd want to feed (could pretty much set my watch by them). I used little cartons at night or if we were out.

PlumBumMum · 18/02/2009 16:22

I found that say she on 8oz, then had all bottles sterlized,
put 4oz of boiled water in, pop them in fridge come feeding time, boil kettle make up to required amount,
water should be perfect temp, add formula, and we were all set to go

I read the other formula thread there was alot about putting formula into boiled water, but if its boiling hot that can denature(kill) some of the proteins in the milk
Also it clogs spoon up and you don't get precise measurements

daisyblue · 18/02/2009 16:46

PlumBumMum - i did wonder about adding it to boiling water (and why the carton says to wait 1/2 hour in the first place)
my friend always did this and said her ds always had the runs ...
your way making perfect sense (&perfect for me as am a bit impatient due to the fact that I'm used to just getting me boob out!)
have used cartons till now - but they don't come cheap, and SMP is, well, ... that belongs on another thread

Def , It will take a couple of goes but I had it mastered that I knew exactly the amount of boiled water to get all to perfect feeding temp
I also had a great little avent container that stored powder for three bottles so I had it all measured out it was great for in a hurry or some one else was babysitting
