worried about my baby

hi
my little girl is now 10 days old we have been going well with the breastfeeding since I decided to try and she will now latch on well and I havent had any pain etc at all which is good. We have been giving her formula as well after each feed since at first she was bottlefed.

BUT 3 days ago we ended up having to take her back into hospital because she was so badly jaundiced and wouldnt wake to feed etc ( she didnt even wake up when they were digging needles in her hands ).

I would like to try and cut down the number of formula feeds she has BUT she is STILL very sleepy and tired easily breastfeeding. she will suck for 5-10 minutes then fall asleep.

We have the midwife coming each day since she is still losing weight even on breast AND fomula milk.

I am really worried about her and I am wondering if it would be best to stick to one kind of feeding and forget the other - It is very time consuming doing both and I do have two toddlers to look after as well so when my husband goes back to work next week Im not sure how I will manage.

I would prefer to just breastfeed her but I am worried that she isnt getting enough?

When she falls asleep she stirs if you move her and still seems hungry and starts sucking again but then falls asleep, This can go on for hours she never seems to be satisfied with just breastfeeds

I dot often say this but this is one case where I would follow the instructions/advice of medical staff around you very closely as this is one poorly baby and food is her medicine.

so sorry you are going through this

I would second the advice given by madmouse, while it would be lovely to attempt to fully bf her, it does sound like she needs all the milk she can get to get rid of the jaundice. Plus it's a massive strain on you to do it all yourself while she's not well and you have two toddlers to cope with.

Can I also reccommend homestart to help you through this tricky patch? they've been invaluable to me, they will look after the children, or just chat with you, they're wonderful. You can self refer, don't need to be passed through via your hv. link to home-start website

Best of luck.
