Confused and frustrated by eating habits

Hi,

This is a bit of an odd post but I was wondering if anyone had experienced something similar. My 6 month has always been a pain to feed but she doesn't seem to be getting any better and the weaning process it turning out to be just as troublesome.

She is now wholly on formula and I make a 120ml bottle every 3 hours. She nurses this bottle for at least an hour and always leaves about 20-30ml, even 60ml is not uncommon. But the process is a battle with her shaking her head and complaining. It drives me mad as I can't get on with anything else during this 'feeding' process. I see all the other mum's babies gulp down their big bottles in 10 mins. Also when it comes to bed time she kicks up such a fuss about having her bottle but then as soon as I lie her down, she then cries and decides to down the whole thing. One trick that often works for bedtime is sitting her on my lap for 5 mins letting her suck a dummy then quickly replace dummy with bottle. I just don't understand how she can be hungry but not want to eat. She is so contrary.

She is thin, but haven't had her weighed since before xmas. Going to go this week and hopefully chat to hv, but don't hold much hope there. Does anyone else have these kind of problems?

By the way, she's never had reflux and she does sleep though (i still give her a dream feed at 11am - usually the best feed of the day - maybe because she's relaxed?)

sorry for long post. looking forward to any responses!

x

Afraid I have nothing useful but bumping for you. Have you tried her with a cup?

Can you get a 6 month old to drink all her milk from a cup? I thought a cup was introduced to provide additional milk/water. I can't believe it's the teat she doesn't like, because she loves her dummy. I did try a cup with water, but it's going to take a while for her to get the hang of it.

cheers

I think so, yes. We've never got 19 wk DD to take a bottle but tried a sippy cup yesterday and she was a bit confused but got more milk into her than a bottle ever did!

It is odd she likes a dummy but not the bottle. I was wondering if the fussing had become habit, hence suggesting cup instead. Have you tried different teats? A poster said the other day that she rejected a latex teat and turned out to be allergic to it. Will she eat solids or have you not tried yet?

speaking from my own experience when ds had colic and came on off the breast every 10sec, how stressed do you get? Do you get worried and try to convince her to take more when she stops.

I found ds and I could wind each other up mighty fine

it may explain why the dream feed goes so well. Seems like she is still getting plenty of milk though!

This sounds like my LO who is also 6 months although I've never been able to get him on the bottle. He only bf's well when he's tired. He doesn't cry for hunger as he's taken to sucking his thumb which I have to remove forcibly before feeding him.

He has dropped to 25th centile now which I am stressed about. He was sleeping through but I have recently returned to work (mornings only). My childminder is trying to feed solids and whatever milk she can get down him but this has resulted in him waking at night as he misses one feed whilst I am at work. Hence I'm pretty exhausted at the moment.

I have tried cups but whereas he will happily sip water from an open cup (a bit messy) as soon as I put milk in it he turns his head away. I am so frustrated and really in need of a break which I don't feel I can ever get as I am the only one who can feed him and even that is a battle as he is very distractable.

I have spent a small fortune on different cups and teats/bottles to no avail.

I feel like I should be proud that I've got to 6months exclusively bf but instead I can't help thinking that if I have another child in the future that they will be ff from day one.

Sorry this isn't much comfort but helps a bit to know there is someone else in a similar situation!
