as we all know our little ones are being introduced to sex education at school at what seems to be younger and younger ages, but why are they not taught or at least exposed to the most natural way a baby feeds? evan in high school bio we were never told anything about it, no wonder the concept seems so alian to alot of younger (and older) mums.
anyone have an opinion on the matter?

Yes
Agree completely.
And as long as companies allowed to peddle artificial formula and markety it as aggressively as they do wqithout it being counter-balnced by proper education, it will continue.

It's part of a societal problem isn't it?

I'd only seen one other woman bf before I gave birth.

It is still quite hidden away, though things are improving - I frequently see bfing women in cafes, etc now.

When I was atampting to bf, m y efforts were not helped by the refusal of any male relatives to be in the same room.

LaDiDaDi · 07/02/2009 16:05

I agree too.

I can't recall anything about bf being taught in any biology lesson I went to (and I did it til A level) nor any PSE type lesson.

I think that it should be compulsory to teach about bf both from a social and biological pov.

I think its a great idea as well but then mine have been exposed to me feeding their younger sister so that should help too

I certainly knew nothing about it as was bottle fed, didn't know anyone that was breast fed but made the effort to learn about it as I wanted to try it with my own dc

I agree with nicky, things are improving and shall hopefully continue to do so

I think you're right - I had never seen anyone breastfeed until my friend had a baby when ds1 was 9 months old. I didn't breatfeed him, and as you say, the concept was alien to me. It never occurred to me for a second that I would put my nipple in a baby's mouth.

popsycal · 07/02/2009 16:11

I had never knowingly seen a baby being breastfed before I was admitted to the maternity ward for a week before having ds1. I htinnk it definitely ought to be part of the curriculum, right from primary school

TBE I am really at that smoking thing!

We did a module within PSHE (or whatever it was called) in Year 9 about teenage pregnancy and how actually it was difficult and not just a ticket to getting loads of attention and a free house, and all I remember was:

Having to fold up a buggy one-handed while holding a pretend baby that cried (although the buses we have here have all got wheelchair spaces but no luggage rack)

Them playing a tape of a baby crying while we tried to do some simple maths sums (Nothing like reality; I would never leave my baby to cry)

Having to do a quiz at the start and the end of the course: one question was "When would you like to have a baby?" (Multiple choice). At the start I answered in 10-20 years, at the end I answered in 5-10 years! Six years later here I am....
