Could it be thrush... and if so should I just wait til Monday?

Think my dd might have a mild touch of thrush. I can see a few little white spots on her bottom gums (about the size of pinheads)- though certainly not covering her whole mouth or anything. She is also really fussing while feeding - fine for the first 10 mins but then lots of crying and refusing to go back on - which is unlike her and she won't take the second side either until she's had a 20 min break or so. She's 6 weeks old and generally pretty chilled out and a good feeder. I've also got slightly sore and itchy breasts - nothing major just a bit uncomfortable.

Does this sound like thrush? and if so, how urgent is it that we get treated?

We've had quite a bit of snow today, so the health visitor drop in I was planning to go to was cancelled, I've left a phone message for them, but not had a response, and the earliest GP appointment I can get, if not an emergency is Monday afternoon.... I don't want it to get worse, but equally, not an emergency, as she will feed little and often... I just worry about her with all the crying that she is uncomfortable. Should I be pushing to see a doctor sooner??

Any MN wisdom appreciated....

Based on my own experience with dd, due to the fussing when feeding, I would ask to see a doctor sooner rather than later, and do download and read the breastfeeding network information leaflet on treatment for thrush so you are aware of best practice - many GPs aren't.

Sometimes BF babies have thrush on the roof of their mouth or at the back at the side- worth having a look.

Thanks Lizzytee - She's been really unsettled this evening and just doesn't seem herself. Older DD has a bug so guess it could be touch of that but think i might try doc again tomorrow. don'twant her to suffer all weekend. had a look at that leaflet - looks useful thanks.

Some people may well disagree with me but as someone who has suffered really badly with thrush - tell them she is not feeding and ham up a bit how much she is upset, thrush is one of those things that will get worse over the weekend without treatment and if it were just you it would be different but at 6 weeks you need to get treatment for your dd asap. If you are trying to get past the receptionist ask for the gp to call you and they may well just write you a prescription for you to pick up.

Otherwise, I don't know if it is the same where you are but my hv was able to write me a presciption for daktarin cream for me and daktarin mouth gel for dd.

Hope this helps, if the gel doesn't shift it you can get nystan for dd and you are able to take fluoxetine (sp) think that is the generic of canesten once, you CAN take it while bf but the pharmacist is not allowed to give it to you if you tell them you are bf and some gps don't like to prescribe it as it is not licensed- like many drugs, obviously it is not ethical to test on pg or bf women so the drug companies, pharmacists and gps have to cover themselves.

Wow sorry that was long but thrush can get so sore!
