10 day old just weighed and no weight gain....

Born on 23 January so now 10days old. Her birthweight of 2.49kg (5.5lbs). I've been feeding her about 2oz every 3 hours - she has just started draining the bottle a bit more but has also chucked up what seems to be a whole feed (she's done this three times in a week but never twice on the trot and it's happened when she guzzles too quickly).

MW says she needs more like 3oz at each feed bbut the other problem is that she sleeps for Britain so how on earth I get any more in her is beyond me. I've tried stripping her down and all the other tricks (she's my ssecond child).

Also should I be worried that she's not put on any weight in the last week despite the fact that I've fed her consistently and she seems to be eating ?

She has gained, because most babies lose in the first few days, so to be at her birth weight is fine!!

herb - when you say she has gained no weight, do you mean she is now at her birthweight and not over? Or do you mean she lost weight and has remained below birthweight?

herbgarden · 02/02/2009 16:35

sorry I realise that I missed a bit. Her birthweight was 2.66kgs. She was at 2.49kgs when she left hospital which is usual but in a week she is today still at 2.49kgs. I can't remember what happened with my ds ie whether he regained his birthweight in the week.

MW as I said didn't seem concerned but if i've been feeding her, why wouldn't she put on any weight??

Are you confident the scales are accurate? Baby weighed naked each time? Is she pooing?

It's good the midwife has been reassuring - she has seen your dd, so anything untoward would be noticed by her.

herbgarden · 02/02/2009 17:43

You know I thought about that. The midwife last week weighed her on our wooden floor - the midwife this week put the scales on our rug....that may have made a difference.

DD certainly looks a good pink (not overly pink) colour and isn't jaundiced in any way.

I'm going to try to up her intake tomorrow and offer her 3oz even if it takes a wee while to get it in.

HV should be round in the next week or so to get her hearing test etc done and I can then find out where the weighing clinics are now - it's been a while since I weighed DS.

are you FF i assume? (from the oz thing)
it is possible your baby is not getting on with the formula? my son was allergic and had to go on lactose free formula. he didnt gain any weight until he was put on the new one.
i only mention it cos u said u baby is chucking whole feeds up, my DS also did this, because his body was rejecting the feed.

is there a reason you didnt BF? if you have any milk left you could consider bf for a few days see if baby is still chucking up alot.
if so it could be reflux?

Yes - different surface for scales might make a difference. Good practice is to use the same hard flat surface each time.

However, the fact the midwife was not worried is a good sign!

You can indeed start/restart breastfeeding if you want - you would need formula alongside it, though, initially.

herbgarden · 02/02/2009 19:23

Yes, didn't get on with breastfeeding last time - tried, failed, got a very nice breastfeeding counsellor involved and we failed together and I know it could be different this time but I've made my mind up so really don't want to go down that route again both on a practical level and emotional level.

I spoke to my sil earlier who said that her kids (all three of them) were vomiters and would sometimes bring up a whole feed probably once in every 16 feeds she reckoned (DD has done it 3 times in one week so not every day and seems to be related to her really guzzling at the bottle).

I'll keep an eye on both the reflux issue and the intolerance issue.....thanks thoug.

I really wouldn't be worried - in our area babies should at day 10 be up to 10 % less of their birthweight which your baby is well within. Also - different scales can make a difference. The health visitor should make a visit at day 14 ish and reweigh you baby and by then your baby should have gained.

She's quite small so I think 2 oz sounds a reasonable amount - you'll find as the days go by - she will either take more or demand more often.

Formula feeding babies do often get quite sicky - but as long as it doesn't appear that she's vomiting all of her feed up at each feed - and combined with her probable weight gain when the HV reweighs - I really wouldn;t be worried. You'll find that this will settle by itself.

herbgarden · 03/02/2009 10:44

Thanks Reesie for your helpful post - I'm doing more demand feeding this time and she takes anything from 1 - 3 oz depending on when she last fed. She took two feeds in the night but she's doing 2/3 hours. She has drained a couple of 2 oz bottles now so I'll offer 3 at every feed and she can at least take more. She's not puking a whole feed all the time.

Apparently speaking to my Mum I was like this - small, hard to feed at first and pretty sicky. She needs to get her weight up, wake up a bit more and then hopefully she'll settle down as you say. It's so different from my ds who was a pretty straightforward 3/4 hour feeder to start and much more predictable. He was 2 weeks early but did weight nearer 7 lbs.
