Taking anti-biotics with a 4 day old BF newborn

DS is four days old and gorgeous! However, I have a rotten cold/cough that is I think rapidly turning into a sinus infection (I had this 3 times in pregnancy too).

I've been prescribed anti-biotics. On the one hand I feel my body needs all the help it can get at the minute to fight off an infection (so it can concentrate on recovering from birth, getting feeding established, keeping up with active 2 year old...) on the other hand I don't like idea of anti-biotics which may upset his digestion and make me more susceptible to thrush (which I had a lot of trouble with with DD).

Help - WWYD?

Keep going with the Bf

congrats on the newborn too.

some antibiotics are safe to take whilst bf. if you do get thrush there is treatment for that. You know your body best. speak to your gp

If you feel you need the anibio to get on top of things take them

keep an eye out for trush and treat it promptly

it could well be the lesser of two evils depending how you feel

If you end up taking anti-bs then acidophilus from a health food shop might help to stave off thrush. I think you have to take quite a lot of it.

A bad sinus infection will completely floor you and you need to be well right now. Take the antibiotics - any disturbance for baby and thrush for yourself will be as nothing compared to the problems you'll have if you get a bad fever and dizzyness etc.

Thanks everyone. I have start on anti-bs today. Not least I need some sleep (when I do get the chance) and at the moment can't breathe for green gunk!

Will def get some probiotics too.

Agree with taking probiotics, take them asap and you should avoid thrush.
Consider taking vitamin C, Zinc and Echinacea too, all good for helping boost the immunue system and for healing.

Is there a good local health food shop you can go to for advice?

I took antibiotics when ds was 1 week old. My GP also prescribed me a course of fluconazole to stave off thrush. It's not ideal; but I was very weak after giving birth and I really needed the antibiotics for mastitis.

Congratulationson the birth of your son

I agree with the poster who said that you know your body best- I took antibiotics post-delivery (prophylactically as my waters went before labour and I had a temp in labour briefly) and I got mega thrush vaginally as well as in breasts and then DS got it. It caused issues with bf (pain! cracks! etc) and we are only just kicking it 11 weeks later. If you feel you need the abx to tackle an infection go for it but be super-vigilant for thrush and take acidophilus. I wish I had!!
