Ds is 4 weeks (three and a half weeks early) and spent a few days in special care but has been a happy and contented baby who feeds and sleeps well.
He has gone from a very contented baby to mega grumpy one and in obvious pain.
He is a very windy baby and i'm positive it's wind that we cant get up from the feeds that is causing the problems trying to get out the bum end.
We already use Dr. Brown bottles (trying level two teats today as he was getting to bored and tired on level 1) and are using Cow and Gate formula,we tried Infacol but it didnt seem to help much is there anything else you can advise me to do?
I know it's "just" wind and most babies get this but it's so horrible seeing him in obvious pain.
We have tried the level 2 teat and it seemed to help a little but he isn't finishing the bottle like he usually does.
Should a 4 week old (3 and a half weeks prem) be feeding more than this?
Last week he was draining 5oz bottles (very very slowly)every 4 hours and settling well after each feed.
The last few days he is struggling to do 4oz before falling asleep on the bottle then screaming and now the feeds are needed every 3 hours-i know over the 24 hour period it is about the same but it has worried me especially now he has such bad trapped wind.
My ds1 had bad trapped wind a a baby but he LOVED his milk and was 2lb heavier at birth and drained every bottle i gave him so this unwillingess to feed is all new to me.
Any ideas?

could be colicky, my ds was. I think it was triggered for him in coming out of scbu and going from every four hours to on demand feeding.

I found that tummy time helped. and lots and lots of holding close.

also tiger in the tree, you know how?

No idea. This should be fun trying to explain

madmouse I think we used to call that crouching tiger hidden biscuit in our house, is it the one where they lay on your forearm so that their arms and legs hang down on each side and theit tummy is against your forearm.
If it is colic I'd also try getting a vibrating chair - it was a sanity saver in our house. You could also tyr some gentle tummy massage if he is screaming in pain.

quite simple

drape baby tummy down over your forearm, face towards your elbow and tummy in your hand for gentle pressure. ds found it very calming.

imagine junglebook tiger in tree with your forearm the tree

If it is colic, and it sounds like it might be, you have my sympathy. It is hard when nothing you do seems to solve the problem, tho madmouse's tips will help. The main thing to remember is that they do grow out of it! Takes a few months, tho, during which you may find the subtitle function on your TV quite useful...

lol wolfcub love that espression. imagining four week old rooting for a biscuit in your elbow

Great mental image of the tiger looking for a biscuit!
Has anybody tried Colief drops?
I think it said you have to leave the drops in the bottle for 4 hours-how can i do that if i'm making up feeds as i need them as per recent guidelines.

I tried both infacol and gripe water - no joy, never tried colief.

nobodysfool · 27/01/2009 21:54

Did anything help wolfcub or was it just time that helped?

DS2 had terrible colic and the only way to wind him was to put him in a sitting position, slightly leaning forward and rub him back. i think the gentle pressure on his tummy helped move the wind. also, infacol, infacol, infacol. give it before and after a feed.

DS2 used to scream every time he farted as i had a terrible time trying to get him to burp. it will pass btw

Wolfcub · 27/01/2009 22:09

Time mostly and the vibrating chair he used to go in it after feeds for at least 10 minutes, it helped to bring the wind up and really seemed to ease the pain.

nobodysfool · 27/01/2009 22:12

I had better get some batteries for the vibrating chair.
I remember feeling the useless last time.
