DS is 4.2mths old and for most of his BF life I have been in pain. Been to see a LC. Diagnosed thrush. Had prescription of Daktarin for me, Nyastin drops for DS. Twice. Just finished course of treatment again. Nipples sore, hypersensitive, red and occasionaly blanch. HELP! What am I to do next????? It's a real threat to BF and I will be devastated if I have to give up. I can't even bear to think about it.

I'm no expert but I'm wondering if it is thrush at all. I say this only on the basis that my friend was just like you and it turned out to be something rarish. One of the treatments was grapefruit seed oil. Sorry I don't know the name.

Is this worth further investigation, perhaps?

ellideb · 27/01/2009 21:14

That that have been Raynauds Syndrome LaTrucha? Cos I've got that too. Don't know how much of a problem that is though??? Or if it is rare? Have you got any more info please?

my gp has set up a repeat prescripton of daktarin gel for ds3 and the one off tablet thing for me and i just have to ring in wheb i need it

thrush is a bugger but you dont need to suffer#

LaTrucha · 27/01/2009 21:19

I think it was more painful than anything else. I thought it was rare but it may not be.

I will try and get more info tomorrow (although we are packing ot leave our house tomorrow so forgive me if I don't make it). I can't ring her now because she'll be sleeping - her baby is a nightmare sleeper on top! But you might like to know that she is still bf and he's 7.5 months.

Breizhette · 27/01/2009 21:24

No ellideb, but I struggled so much to establish BF that I empathise when you say that you would be devastated to have to give up.

ellideb · 27/01/2009 21:24

Does it keep coming back for you popsycal?

LaTrucha don't phone her up!!! though I appreciate your help! I've just googled the oil and it seems to be an alternative treatment for thrush. I might just try it. Maybe my thrush bugs are resistent to conventional treatment.

OP posts:
popsycal · 27/01/2009 21:44

yep
cant get rid of it in ds3
gp said medication is fine - even if i h sav e to take a tavblet every few weeks

LaTrucha · 28/01/2009 08:03

I know that what she had wasn't thrush.

wastingmyeducation · 28/01/2009 08:03

Although we had other issues at the start, I've been very lucky to not have suffered from thrush/blocked ducts/mastitis so far (8 months) and I put this down to following some advice I read in a book before DS was born, to leave the bra off as often as possible.

Basically, for the first few months, I only wore a bra when I left the house.

The damp, warm, yoghurty environment of a feeding bra must be perfect for thrush-growing, even if, unlike me, you've got a clean one on everyday.

ellideb · 28/01/2009 08:56

It is a bit more comlex then that for me wastingmyeducation the reason I have thrush is due to three courses of antibiotics post Caeserean and a cracked and bleeding nipple at the beginning from which I imagine the thrush entered. If going braless alone helped I'd burn all of my bras! Besides I have to wear a bra as my nipples are soooo sensitive that even water from the shower on them is horrible. A towel feels like a brillo pad and if my son knocked them whilst bra less I wouldn't be responsible for my actions! I sterilise DS dummy's twice a day, change my breast pads at every feed and use a clean bra every other day.

I understand ellideb, I'm just putting the idea out there!
I found the pads sticking to the scabs to be more painful than anything else, so only wore them when in company! [ouch]

nigglewiggle · 28/01/2009 09:01

I found HOT washing bras, bedding and towels on a regular basis helped to kill the organisms. As if you've not got enough to do .

ellideb · 28/01/2009 13:52

I know you do wastingmyeducation, it's the treatment that is so tedious and with no guarantee it will work. I've just been to see the Gp, very dissapointed with the lack of treatments on offer but he has given me some tablets to take, however they have not been tested on BF mums so who knows how they will effect DS. GP said it's my choice whether I want to take them or not and to blame the drugs company not him. Cheers. I'm currently washing my bedding/towels on 50c, is that hot enough do you think? Maybe I should do the same with my bras too.

Hi there, just wanted to send my sympathy, it sounds very painful and draining to always be uncomfy when you are feeding... well done for keeping going! Just my twopenneth but I have three friends recently all had thrush, and it's taken a while to clear it. All of them had it recurrently until they tried Miconazole oral gel for baby rather than Nystatin suspension. Apparently Nystatin is only around 75% effective whereas Miconazole is 100%effective. Just out of interest wondered if you are on treatment as recommended by Breastfeeding Network? ie fluconazole for you in tablet form for 10-14 days, daktarin cream for your nipples and daktarin (miconazole) oral gel for baby? I know prescribing advice is bit unsupportive under 4 mths for miconazole but you say that your LO is more than 4 months. Also one friend's GP wouldn't prescribe it so she bought it herself from an on-line chemist. Hope that helps a little or have you already tried all these things?

Thanks for the info loobee i will copy and paste the medications so I can show my Gp if this treatment fails. It's a great help. And no I havnt tried them yet. The Gp never offered anything else, he was looking through his BNF for this one, didn't seem to know much!

Starlight yes feeling very about it all, not what I imagined the experience to be like, but hey, neither did I expect to spend 3 days in labour, ending with an EMC! But not to be all doom and goom, motherhood is the best thing ever and has far exceeded my best dreams. How's baby Starlight doing?

ellideb, have you seen a breastfeeding counsellor again recently?

poor latch or positioning can cause symptoms almost identical to thrush, which could explain why it isn't clearing up.
has baby been checked for tongue tie? sometimes it can look as though they are latching on ok when in fact on the inside it just isn't working properly

ellideb · 28/01/2009 20:24

Hi thisisyesterday I've been to see her twice, once in december and once in the beginning of January. She checked for tongue tie twice and made some tweaks to mine and DS positioning but said his latch was fine. I questioned his latch several times as I was convinced that that was the problem. She said that the symptoms wouldn't have improved with the medication if it was latch and that he had a good latch.
