Ds was born three and a half weeks early and spent a few days in special care but has been a happy and contented baby who feeds and sleeps well.
He has gone from a very contented baby to mega grumpy one and in obvious pain.
He is a very windy baby and i'm positive it's wind that we cant get up from the feeds that is causing the problems trying to get out the bum end.
We already use Dr. Brown bottles (trying level two teats today as he was getting to bored and tired on level 1) and are using Cow and Gate formula,we tried Infacol but it didnt seem to help much is there anything else you can advise me to do?
I know it's "just" wind and most babies get this but it's so horrible seeing him in obvious pain.

My HV has recommended a homeopathic remedy called lycopodium, 6c strength. Little white tablets. Crush one and mix with a teaspoon of boiled cooled water (prob won't dissolve) and give. Can give one dose per hour to a max of 6.

It will either

  1. Do nothing
  2. Give you the worst night EVER then be completely sorted
  3. Gradually work over a week.

She said that no amount of back rubbing will bring up the wind as its in the gut. I found that rubbing in a clockwise circular motion helped him.

I didn't try the lycopodium in the end as I struggled to find it (v rural) and he sorted himself out anyway

Yes and very upsetting for Mum!

Tell me about it.
My hormones are all over the place.
We have tried the level 2 teat and it seemed to help a little but he isn't finishing the bottle like he usually does.
Should a 4 week old (3 and a half weeks prem) be feeding more than this?
Last week he was draining 5oz bottles (very very slowly)every 4 hours and settling well after each feed.
The last few days he is struggling to do 4oz before falling asleep on the bottle then screaming and now the feeds are needed every 3 hours-i know over the 24 hour period it is about the same but it has worried me especially now he has such bad trapped wind.
My ds1 had bad trapped wind a a baby but he LOVED his milk and was 2lb heavier at birth and drained every bottle i gave him so this unwillingess to feed is all new to me.

could be dairy intolerance

My ds had terrible bum wind, i found holding his feet and pushing them so he's knees went towards his tummy would give instant relief and even help the wind out instantly.

IAteMakkaPakka · 30/01/2009 10:54

Infacol can help - get it from the chemist or supermarket. Sleepsforwimps suggests the massage technique - I too found this really helpful, your HV might be able to advise about other methods. Deep, hot baths (my HV suggested buying a big bucket from the local ironmonger - cheaper than these TummyTubs you can buy!) are also good, and for general comfort try carrying him in a sling or over your arm with his arms and legs dangling down either side. Also, have just thought of Colief, might help, might not.

I can probably list twently more things if I have a think, mine was like this and it was tough - much sympathy.

My DS 6wks is like this too, has dreadful trouble resettling in the night and he strains loads which makes him sick. When he does get it out it is what I would call proper man trumps.

mad4mybaby · 30/01/2009 16:02

you can use gripe water from 4 weeks which i find fab

herbgarden · 02/02/2009 15:48

My ds was like this too.
I used gripe water from 4 weeks, I would do the leg cycling thing and also massage tummy with him over my knee
You have my sympathies !
