Bottle Feeding 7 month old - advice on when to feed, how much etc.

I was breastfeeding 7 month old ds2 until a couple of weeks ago (stopped for a few reasons but mainly due to some tablets i'm on where you shouldn't bf).

We're currently playing around with timings etc. to find something that works. A HV who called to help me with his sleep problems etc. advised to up his food in the day and to do bottles at breakfast, mid morning then afternoon and bed. He's not that bothered about his milk but does love his food. The max milk he tends to take is 5oz at a time but quite often it's just a couple of ozs.

What I'm trying to find out is if there is a recommended amount of milk they should have in a day at this age? Also, do people think it's best to stagger milk and feeds or to maybe have milk shortly after each meal?

Yesterday dh had him most of the day (1st time ever!) and he didn't get an afternoon bottle. Interestly ds2 went from 11.15 (when had more milk as usual) to 8.15 last night without milk whereas he usually wakes every 3 hours and only milk settles him. I'm wondering whether because his body usually gets 'something' (food or milk) quite often, it makes him wake for it in the night whereas yesterday he had less and so slept better??? Oh, I don't know, just major lack of sleep is making me less confident about what I'm doing (plus I'm not used to bottle feeding so not sure what to give).

What are your thoughts?

TIA

i'm not an expert but at this age shouldn't his main source of nutrition be his milk? I've just started weaning my six month old and what I've read is that the milk feed should come before the food, so that they don't fill up on food instead of milk.

my NHS pamphlet says that once they are eating plenty of solids several times a day, they should have 500-600ml (18-20 ounces) of breastmilk/formula until at least 12 months of age.

It is best for him to have milk before a solid meal. HV told me 720ml is recommended for 6 months onwards.

Thanks for the replies, it was actally the HV who told me to up food and switch to food before milk!

at 7 months ds had 5 bottles (one was in the night - he gave it up at 8 months). I staggered bottles and food so a rough routine would have been:

7am - milk
8am - breakfast
11am- milk
12pm - lunch
3pm - milk
5pm - dinner
7.15pm - milk
in the night up to 8 months - milk

From 6 months a minimum of 20oz is recommended but some of this can be gained from food too e.g. milk in cereal, in cooking, etc and any other dairy products you give e.g. cheese, yoghurt, etc
