BPA in bottles

Pregnant with baby number 3 (surprise) and am about to buy all new bottles steriliser etc although plan to BF initially. Notice things have changed and Canadians have banned BPA in baby bottles deeming the small ammount of leaching of BPA into milk when bottle heated harmful. Any thoughts/research either way? Other 2 kids look ok on their Avent although son (3.5yr) going through stage of dressing up in anything long and frilly and saying "mummy am I pretty?"

thanks

I thought long and hard about this too, but decided against lovely glass bottles after seeing them on-line for about £20 each. If you're breastfeeding, the length of exposure will be very short, won't it? I think the bottles have been around long enough that any link would have been significantly indicated, and although the Canadian studies seem to have shown BPA is present, I don't think there's a link between, say, early puberty and BPA bottles. So much to feel worried and guilty about, isn't there? Our government must have looked at the same studies and made a different conclusion. Is that because Avent is a British company that sells all over the world?

Mam and born free bottles are BPA free and are plastic. Avent have started making some BPA free bottles (honey coloured) but I dont know if they are available anywhere yet. I think tommee tippee are in the process of making BPA free bottles but again dont know when they will be available.

EBenes - the UK will probably ban them in the future we're always a bit behind in these things...
Cuth, if you are planning on bf then I wouldn't buy bottles/steriliser yet - too tempting if things are tricky!

i have only ever used mam bottles which are BPA free. you can get these are all the normal places (boots, toys r us etc)

Thank you ladies. had terrible trouble BF second baby who has hypermobility sydrome which seemed to make latching on v diff (lasted 2 weeks before realised he was v v hungry and went straight to a fast flow teat!) so am thinking i should be prepared this time. Will definately have a look at the mam bottles. It seems jury still out on BPA so if there is an alternative that is reasonably priced it seems sensible to go for it.

We started with tommee tippee bottles as planned to ex b/f then occasionally express.

Ended up mixed feeding though meaning DD had a lot more exposure to bottles so I switched over to the MAM bottles. I love them, really like the anti colic device in them. Ours were £10.99 for three but I saw them in TK MAXX today for £6.99 for three.

Think MAM had a buy one get one free sale on at one point too.

EBenes · 25/01/2009 17:22

I bought some MAM bottles today. I love them! There seems to be less teat squished on dd's face than with the Avent and she seemed to drink a lot more easily. Wish I'd used them for dd1.

chancelloroftheexchequers · 25/01/2009 17:25

Yes, the teat on the MAM bottles is flat rather than round, if that makes any sense. DD got on far better with those than the TT ones, plus there's no air hole to get the right way up (which my mother could not get the hang of).

EBenes · 25/01/2009 17:33

When I tried TT with DD1, they used to sort of invert while she was sucking, so the nipple went further and further into the big round bit. So I switched to Avent. MAM didn't occur to me - think I saw them as old fashioned/cheap alternative. I am genuinely surprised by how much better they are. TT seemed state of the art and Avent top quality. They need to work on their advertising.

chancelloroftheexchequers · 25/01/2009 18:37

We had the same trouble with the TT teat ebenes.

Marvellous Im sold. And they seem to be available at my mothercare too. Even better.

Thank you

Cuth this site has glass bottles as well as Lansinoh bottles (for 'breastmilk storage' but they do have holes for teats) which are BPA free. x
