My DS is 12 months old and in the last couple of weeks he has slowly been giving up his before bed feed. I have no plans to give up BF but I think my DS may have other ideas . In addition he has started to sleep through from 6.30 ish to 7.00 ish for the first time so I don't think he is hungry. He still enjoys his morning Bfeed but I have now started giving him a beaker of cows milk before bed as well as offering BM ( which he refuses) - he gets more excited by the cows milk !! I am a bit concerned that one BF is not enough ?? he has cows milk with his cereal and cheese, fromage frais etc in the day so I think he is probably getting enough calcium ? I really hope he keeps going with the one feed but am a bit concerned that he might be thinking about giving up ? Anyone got any words of advice for me please..........

Unless you actually want to drop the bedtime feed - why don't you feed him instead of offering him the cows milk? With a belly full of milk he prob doesn't fancy any of yours

thanks - I have been offering him BM for a couple of weeks before bed and he keeps pushing me away. He very actively doesnt want BM so the last couple of nights I have taken up some cows milk in a beaker and he has drank some or all of that. I still offer BM either before or after the cows milk cos I wondered if it was because my supply was low or something. I am quite sad that he has given up that feed TBH....

Is he teething or anything? If he is, the cup may be easier for him to drink out of at the moment. I would keep offering as long as you are happy to and he may come around again. It's quite unusual for babies to wean themselves at that age so it is probably more of a temporary thing...

thanks.......don't think he is teething but its possible as his third tooth came through a couple of weeks ago and I had heard they tend to come through in pairs.
I will persevere - wondered how practical it would be to express and give it in a cup as a medium term option if he totally goes off feeding from me as I would have liked to carry on for a while longer for the immunological benefits. Has anyone done this and found it ok ?

sorry my dd1 gave up bottle of milk around 11 months (she was only ever bottle fed) and then dd4 who was exc breast fed gave up bf around 11 months she just wasn't interested put would slurp down a bit of cows milk if offered!!

I think some of them just aren't that interested!

Mine self weaned at 13 months and refused to drink cows milk instead. I was gutted but not much you can do. Lovely that he still has morning feed though, ds dropped that pretty early, our last feed to go was mid afternoon.

I never realised how emotionally attached I am to breastfeeding til he started dropping feeds !

It is the end of an era, it is hard! I just kept being positive - I no longer had to do bedtimes and I didn't have to worry about weaning her at the age of 4 if she'd become a harcore extended feeder.
