Dd5 (6 weeks) appears to have thrush- white coating on her tongue & white spots at the back of her mouth. I, on the other hand appear to have no symptoms. Obviously I shall be making a GP's appointment but what do I need to know/do?

(I have looked at kellymom etc but as it's American wasn't sure if the drugs etc are the same here )

Hi there snorris,

My dd had thrush almost from the start, though I'd no symptoms for ages and no-one picked up on it until we asked after about a month. Sounds pretty similar to yours.

We got lots of different things for it from gp, seemed to clear up eventually. We had nystan (or nystatin) which is a liquid and smells pretty strong, dd didn't like it at all but had to keep going because it's antibiotic as well as anti fungal for some reason.

We also had daktarin oral gel for her and a different daktarin cream for me. The cream for yourself if she's bf is stronger and needs to be washed off really well before each feed which was a pain because dd slept all night and fed all day from a really young age. what i ended up doing was using the oral gel on myself as well during the day instead of my own stuff. went on for a while and 2 courses of nasty nystan but seemed to go at last.

I also took super strong probiotics in the hope that some would get through to her (very unscientific, but you live in hope). If she'll take a bottle or any expressed milk there are infant probiotics you can try (restore they're called i think) - didn't work out for me cos dd won't take bottle but i've heard good things from a friend who bottle feeds.

Good luck, hope you get it sorted before you do get symptoms yourself - it's pretty sore

Thank you. She is bf, haven't got round to trying her with EBM yet but that's worth considering .

you will get some gel (daktarin) for her and put it on your nipples too as they will get it soon! you may get a different cream, we also had the drops but they were useless. mine only went after being given pills (flucanazole)

Wash everything hot wash that has been near your nipples

be wary of expressing if you have thrush as thrush will get on pump, in milk, everything

look at BFN thrush leaflet

Hope it goes for you soon, its really nasty and sore

We were given Daktarin for inside DD's mouth and I got another cream (cannot remember what now) for my nipples. TBH though DD didn't get the white spots in her mouth etc, I seemed to be the only one who got the thrush IYSWIM.

The cream helped to clear me up a bit and DD seemed fine with the daktarin.

DO see to DD as soon as you can because it is almost certain you will get it and it is one of the worst pains I have ever felt (I would rather have been in labor again lol) It is the reason I stopped BFing DD at 7mo as my GP wouldn't treat me any longer as DD was then over 6mo (I didn't have the strength to argue)

I'm using disposable breast pads, would I be better off getting some washable ones?

no, keep with disposable but change very often. washable - you risk not being able to get them 'clean' of thrush iyswim.

Ok, thanks. I didn't know whether the plastic in them wouldn't help.
