Retorts for disapproving looks when I BF my toddler...

I have to take DD2 to the doctors later, she is 15 months and veyr active but as she is miserable/feverish etc she wants feeding every 5 minutes at the moment.
Last time I fed at doctors she was 7 months and I got muttered comments and just did that red faced ignoring thing.
So give me your best comebacks for
'It's not right'
'That child is far too old'
etc
etc

and I shall practise in front of the mirror

(surgery is v pro BFIng but waiting room is other end of corridor from lovely receptionists...)

"Its not right" - Ooh, have I got a bad latch ? Thanks for pointing that out

'That child is far too old" - I'm trying to teach her to make her own drinks, but you know how it is.

For staring, make total deliberate eye contact and smile broadly. It really freaks people out

"what kind of pervert stares at a woman breastfeeding? you need treatment."

cmotdibbler · 19/01/2009 13:56

I forgot this one " Yes, isn't it lovely to see a toddler feeding "

petrovia · 19/01/2009 13:58

'oh, shall I just let her scream then?' (look genuine as you say this)

'It's nothing to do with you'

'Oh, haven't you heard, it's actually better for them than formula?'

Sorry not much you can do about weirdos like that - they're usually very set in their ways.

Should I ever get challenged for bfing in public, my plan is just to say Why? to everything they say until they give up. Might be worth a go (and hope she's feeling better soon ).

JackBauer · 19/01/2009 14:25

I like cyteen's pervert comment, thats good, although I'd never have the guts to pull it off.

I know I can't change the way they think 'although I got my mum round ina few minutes by showing her 'drunk baby face'' I just want them to think twice about making such a personal comment, I mean I don't go up to old women and suggest they buy a better fitting bra so their boobs don't get caught in their belts, do i?

How about

I'm hoping that the extra IQ benefit means she won't grow up to be an ignorant git

Kathsmum · 19/01/2009 14:37

I always used a light scarf/ pashmina type when feeding and most people never even noticed!

Otherwise ask them to leave as they're making you uncomfortable. Hopefully they'll have decency to at least go red.

JackBauer · 19/01/2009 14:46

I was veyr good at being discreet with DD1 but DD2 likes to lift my top and drum on my boobs with both hands, which makes her giggle, which makes everyone look, which is why she doesn't normally get fed in company!

You got mutterings for feeding a 7 month old?! Crikey.
I like the repeated 'Why?', make them look stupid and hopefully make them think.

JackBauer · 19/01/2009 20:33

gutted. After all that was just me and 2 other mothers with school age kids, and when I started feeding her they just smiled and started commenting on her hair.
Just when I want a ruck I meet lovely people!

Just give them a blank look and whip out the other nork. They'll soon shut up.
I was very amused while bf my 20mo in the dr's surgery recently, the Doctor looked straight ahead as he asked me questions as though he would be struck by lightening for looking directly at me! Seriously, I'm sorry he was uncomfortable, but that's why it needs to be done more rather than less IMO
