Rice Milk instead of Formula at 12.5 months?

DS bit sensitive to Cow's Milk so I want to know, now that he doesn't need formula any more (that's right isn't it?) do I have to give him a certain amount of milk (in our case Rice Milk) each day or just when he wants and and watered down apple juice and water at other times. What is the right balance/mix?

Many thanks

have you been told to give him rice milk as normally they try and keep him on formula till 2 because of calcium there are lactose free formulas or they do cows milk now which is lacto free my ds was not allowed to change to cows milk til age 2

TBH you really should check with the consultatiebureau if it wasn't them or the GP who suggested using it in place of cows milk / formula.

thanks for your suggestions. Will check this out. Have read in several books that Soy milk is ok instead of Cow's so I just assumed that Rice Milk was. Haven't read anywhere that one should also supplement with formula but will check it out at CB/HuisArts.

Thanks again for your help.

Lilimama - you can get rice milk that has added calcium - we use it for DS but he is much older at 2y9m.

Personally I'd be happier with rice milk than soy if it the CB/HA said it was OK. I don't like the idea of giving soy where avoidable because of the phytoestrogen.

There is another problem with rice milk and soya milk as well as the calcium they don't have enough calories in. It is like feeding them skimmed cows milk rather than full fat.
We only found this out when referred to a dietician as DD was not gaining weight. They recommend using formula up to 2yrs because of this
