I am bf my 8-month ds who has had pretty bad reflux since day one. We now think he has an allergy to cow's milk and although my paediatrician did not think it was necessary, I have been amending my own diet to try and exclude dairy (really difficult).

However, I think my ds has been more sick since I switched to soya milk and I know cow's milk allergies are often followed by a soya allergy. If this is the case what should I be avoiding in my diet? Can I eat edamame, I love it and recently bought loads for the freezer? I alkso eat a lot of vegetarian food? Aargh

Also can anyone tell me anything about Nanny, the goat's milk formula. My ds will not touch allergy formula like neocate (don't blame him, it smells like cat sick) and I would like to introduce a bottle at some point.

I'd really appreciate the advice as ds's sick is getting really smelly, horrible and copious and he is not sleeping at all.

I avoided ALL dairy and soya from my diet for 16 months whle bf my allergic ds (including edamame, soy sauce, milk chocolate etc.) Never took a bottle (I tried!), completely refused NEocate and all the others (can't remember what they're called now).
Def saw the difference when I did a food challenge and ate milk.

My DS is also 8 months and I've been dairy free for a while. Didn't get on with soya milk so now have rice milk (emriched with calcium) and also use it in his food.

I asked about the Nanny goat formula on MN a while ago and got v mixed feedback. But most agreed that there is no point in trying it if you think your DC has a dairy allergy as it will cause the same problem. Also the allergist went nuts when I asked about it and said it should be banned!

I'm currently trying to get my DS to take neocate and we are mixing breast & formula (currently up to 40/60 split). I found its not nearly as bad as nutramigen which he wouldn't touch. So it might be worth giving it another try otherwise your diet will end up v restricted.

also have rice milk (me and him) and have got calcuim supplements (in syrup form) for ds - can give when properly on solids, over 12 months etc.

Hi thanks for this advice. I have a list of ingedients to look for to avoid dairy such as whey. Is there a similar list for avoiding soya or do I simply look for soya in the ingredients.

I am finding this fairly difficult and I really miss my coffee especially after a night of no sleep. I guess I will have to learn to drink it black.

My ds2 is also dairy allergic (to the point of anaphylaxis). We were told to avoid goat/sheep milk because there is a 95% chance of allergy to these in cows milk allergic children. There is a 45% chance of soy allergy as well. I am veggie but have been dairy free for a couple of months as ds2 won't drink neocate either. If you look around for different products though dairy free is not so bad if you make all your own food and don't eat out much. Try www.goodnessdirect.co.uk for a lot of dairy free alternatives and if avoiding soya as well you can get either rice or oat milk and rice milk ice cream is particularly yummy!.

Cow and gate pepti is more paletable (sp?) than some of the other hypoallergenic formulas. You could try that. Alternatively, when I've really needed to have ds2 drinking his neocate we found strawberry flavour nesquick did the trick and then you can slowly reduce the the nesquick. I've also been trying to think abit laterally about how to feed it to him and have been using it to make custards etc which I can give him as a snack or pudding (he is now 8 months)
