Needs some ideas for my breastfeeding group, resources and such

Been to my local bfing group and they have secured a bit of funding to buy some resources and equipment for the group - talking to the HV who was helping today we were thinking on the lines of toys but also books - she suggested a loan system.

What would you like to see at a bfing group? What sort of books? I was thinking "Politics of Breastfeeding" but what about other books? What ones did you find useful?

I don't think I'll bother with the book by that LC that a certain mumsnetter of the tiny, pale, feline variety saw (is that circumspect enough to avoid being sued? )- as I found it to be a pile of crap not particularly helpful.

I was also thinking of some children's books as well - I have a few "I'm made from Mama's Milk", "We Like to Nurse!" and "Mama's milk/Mama te alimenta".

Any suggestions?

Anything from La Leche League. Loads of excellent books, dvd's, leaflets etc on bfing, parenting etc that most people won't have come accross before.

Check out there website:

Thanks for that!

Resources about extended breastfeeding would be good - often the groups concentrate on starting bfing, and forget about continuing. Oh, and help about working and bfing too

The LLL leaflets are cheap and very useful too.

Is it the ABM who sell a resource pack with appropriate toys and books ?

Some suitable slings to borrow/try would be cool too.

Worth a posting on your local Freecycle for books, general toys etc - I gave all my preg and bfing books to a local group when I didn't need them anymore

List of useful websites - Kellymom, WorkandPump etc

These are all good ideas, thanks!
It's a Surestart group so not sure how they would stand getting stuff from external agencies but can certainly suggest it!
They are supposed to be startind a peer supporter course which I hope to do in the very near future!
Definitely a good idea about the extended bfibg, DS at 12.5mo is the oldest baby in the area who goes to the group and is likely the current oldest bfed baby in the town - bf rates where i live are terrible hence the need for this group to grow!

You probably don't have enough funds, or the space you utilise might not be appropriate but at the support group I attend the chairs are rubbish for feeding! So uncomfy- if you could get a chair or two that were comfortable, decent height, footstools etc they would be great tools to help women learn about positioning, attachment etc...

AnarchyAunt · 12/01/2009 17:04

If you look on Hunker's blog there is a pack for Children's Centres with toys, books ec to normalise BF. Maybe look at that for some ideas?

AnarchyAunt · 12/01/2009 17:06

Here

BouncingTurtle · 12/01/2009 17:07

Well I can ask... actually they could do with some decent bfing pillows! The chairs aren't that bad - fairly comfy, but a proper nursing chair would be nice for mums with newborns!

How about some equipment so that you can demonstrate how to give milk when BF isn't establishing easily? Such as breast pump, feeding cup, nursing supplementer.

terramum · 12/01/2009 18:53

If they are starting a peer support course it is likely to be through LLL so you might find they will have lots of suggestions for useful books etc anyway

..you also mentioned toys...really good idea to have a good range from babies up to pre-school to cater for older bf'ing childrens and siblings.

"the book by that LC that a certain mumsnetter of the tiny, pale, feline variety saw "
I'm so curious! Can you CAT me?

I want to do peer support as well

terramum · 12/01/2009 19:03

knitted boobs are always useful...and rather fun!...although you will probably find some local knitters would be only too happy to help you out there.

BouncingTurtle · 12/01/2009 19:24

I'll email you SPB... pretty sure I have your email!

Could someone post on You Tube a 'what to do guide?'

Most breast feeding problems occur around 2am when no one is around!

BouncingTurtle · 13/01/2009 07:17

iloveilovemydog - if you google Dr Jack Newman, his website has loads of videos about breastfeeding - particularly about correct latch.

Hmmm... I wonder if they would stretch to a PC with lots of useful website that people could look at. Iloveilovemydog makes a very important point about needing help in the wee hours and how to get it. Naturally Mumsnet would be first on the list.

LLL leaflets that people can take away. Info on breastfeeding and working.
