What is going on with our morning feeds?!

My ds is 20 weeks and has always been an enthusiastic feeder (bf) but for the last few days isn't very interested in nursing in the mornings (from the first feed of the day that is). He feeds barely for five minutes and that's it. I think it's partly because he wants to get going with the new excitements of the day (blowing raspberries, trying to roll over, watching the cat, watching own hands etc.!) but also he squirms about and moans a lot and then when I sit him up (or sometimes even before) he pukes all over me. It's the same for the 7am, 10am and 1pm feeds and only later that he settles down for a feed.

His nappies are fine and he's happy as larry but he is now waking an extra time in the night, presumably to catch up.

I'm new at all this! Is this just what babies do?! Does it stop at some point?!

It does sound like he is just distracted - like most babies get at that age. Maybe he also has some trapped wind in the morning so he feels a bit 'full' already - could you try winding him first? As far as keeping him focussed on the feed - it can be a tricky one! You could try a darkened room or my friend used to drape a muslin cloth over her little boy while he was feeding. Also remember that at this stage he may be getting quite a lot within those 5 mins because they do get more effiicent as they get older. It does pass eventually btw!

Thanks bubbleymummy. He is very easily distracted. We have removed TV, radio, reading a book over his shoulder, all people and the cat from the room with no luck! Even in a darkened room he finds something more interesting. If I put anything over him he just grabs it and plays with it. And as for feeding him out in public...forget it, he is just too long, wriggly and nosey.

I have started being more meticulous about winding since last night and he was a bit better this morning - and managed not to sick it up all over me. Little monster.

bump

I don't know what is going on. He just won't feed between 8 and 12. My nipples are killing me where he twists off and my breasts are the size of Jordan's by lunchtime.

I am winding him and using Infacol again and am going to try applying Bonjela to his gums a bit before. All distractions removed. Otherwise I am at a loss as to what's going on.

Did anyone else's baby have this phase?
