Aspartame - effect on breastmilk?

Hi,

Just wondered if anyone's found any link between drinking fizzy drinks containing aspartame and baby getting a jippy tum? I don't normally drink that sort of thing but I had some apple Tango yesterday and today DS (8 days) has been writhing with wind, poor soul, and generally seems a bit unsettled. He's slept a lot too but I'm not sure that's related! I also had a goat's cheese pizza with rocket (it was my birthday, not my usual diet!) and though I have a couple of pieces left it's not the sort of thing I eat on a daily basis so it should be easy to spot if Max's tum settles down, but just wondered if anyone knew aspartame or goat's cheese were breastmilk gremlins?

Thanks,

Heather

Watchiong with interest.
Ds not sleeping at night. Awake 10pm-5am. Crying in pain for 2-3 hrs. waiting to see Paed.
Looked on kellymom, it syas that no food has been 'proven' to affect bm. But then other websites say stay off dairy etc etc.
I wonder - don't know what to beleive.
I drink quite a bit of diet coke. so am watching to see what people post.

MrsHD, I have not heard that aspartame affects babies' guts and would not think it would - I can't think there would be much aspartame in the milk after it had been through your own gut and this site confirms this:

drugsafetysite.com/aspartame as does this:

toxnet.nlm.nih.gov

Aspartame breaks down in the gut,and while its metabolyte phenylalanine does appear in milk, this is in breastmilk anyway - the second link will show you just how minuscule the elevated level actually is

I honestly think that at 8 days old, your baby is probably just showing signs of being 8 days old, rather than being affected by drinks or cheese He may be writhing, but babies do writhe, and who knows if this is wind or not?

Fair enough, just wondered as that and goat's cheese were variations from my usual diet. never had any windy problems with DD so keeping an eye on it. Thanks for the links.

I drank buckets of diet fizzy stuff when BFing, never seemed to make a difference... caffiene was the only thing.... too many cups of tea and the wee one was bouncing about like he had new batteries.
