Does calpol/swallowing a bit of bath water etc. wreck the 'virgin gut'?

Or is it just formulas? Bit late now as DS has had a swig of bathwater (by accident) and calpol the other day, but was just wondering if anyone knew. Thanks

what about putting things in the mouth? all that dust!!! aaaarrrrggghhh. There goes the virgin gut.

aurorec · 07/01/2009 17:47

So what exactly are the effects of ABs on the gut?
DS had to take ABS for 8 weeks after birth (he had fluids in his kidneys) and has been exclusively BF. His poos smell and look exactly like normal BF poos. Very yellow seedy and quite innocuous smelling.

Grendle · 07/01/2009 19:20

Antibiotics kill the good bacteria that line the gut and are essential for all of us. They are replenished afterwards. There are also hypothesised links between early exposure to ABs and allergy development.

According to WHO "Exclusive breastfeeding" is defined as giving no other food or drink ? not even water ? except breast milk. It does, however, allow the infant to receive drops and syrups (vitamins, minerals and medicines).

No idea of the bearing of this on the virgin gut theory.

exclusive BF, virginity etc

it all seems a bit geared up to make you feel rubbish if you didn't get it all right at the right time

I must say that I had not heard of the phrase before today and it seems yet another recipe for a guilt trip

anyhoo, my ds was dosed up on antibiotics, antivirals, anticonvulsants and god knows what else and fed on a glucose drip for the first few days of life. brilliant scbu then gave him my hard won colostrum drop by precious drop and I bf from one week old. I bf while he got used to solids and I see the fact that my previously colicky-baby-with-sensitive-tummy now does well processed numbers as a personal bf achievement.

virgin gut is overrated

whomovedmychocolate · 07/01/2009 21:41

I am entertained by the thought of you all sniffing your baby's poo to see whether their fecal flora was present

AccidentalMum · 07/01/2009 21:54

Googling 'Virgin Gut' mainly brings up forums (including this thread) rather than anything 'official' but I can't help think that it's over sensitive to suggest that the phrase is chosen to induce guilt.

Someone asked the same Q on hitched!

Gut closure and recovery.

madmouse · 07/01/2009 22:00

sorry if my use of the word guilt caused offence. I did not mean to. We all do our best for our kiddies and I want to respect that.

I also do not mean that the concepts is drawn up to cause guilt, but that it may well be the effect it ends up having.

Maria2007 · 07/01/2009 22:07

Madmouse, I don't think it caused offense. Personally, I just find the term 'virgin gut' (and all its connotations) terribly amusing.

madmouse · 07/01/2009 23:02

thanks Maria, just a bit cautious because of all the hurt and offense happening on another thread I am on.
