best breast pads?

I seem to leak a lot of milk (although I don't know what is "normal", I collected almost 2 fl oz in one of those collecting shells during one feed, from the opposite boob to the one I was nursing on).

Anyway, I have tried mothercare ones, whichj were bulky, leaked, and were about as absorbant as a used teabag. I then tried lanisoh ones which were good (thinner and much more absorbant) but don't always stay in place despite a little adhesive strip. They are also relatively expensive and I was that each one is individually wrapped which seems really wasteful (unfortunately however, I don't think my green-guilt extends to using washable ones). So...any other recommendations? Its like the Trevi bloody fountain inside my bra.

Definitely Johnson's. Best by miles, I reckon.

luvaduck · 05/01/2009 19:23

agreee johnsons are the best- although lanisoh are good under thin tops. avent are similar to johnsons.

i found i leaked less as time went on - and now at 16 months don't leak at all

I too have a fountain in my bra, even at 18 weeks I still leak everywhere. I use the tommee tippee one and have never had a leak through. When DD feeds from one side I can feel the other let down and drip, if I feed without a bra dd ends up with a big puddle on her!

Hayao · 05/01/2009 20:30

ergh no johnsons I didn't like at all.

lansinoh or tommee tippee. They have that gel stuff in that dispos have. Not eco at all but they actually work. Yes the wrapping is annoying but perhaps it balances against all that extra washing (perhaps...)

katiepotatie · 05/01/2009 20:32

I used Tommee Tippee, they are the best, and Boots own slim ones are great. I felt the Johnston's ones were too bulky and left fuzz all over my boobs!

roomforthree · 05/01/2009 20:34

Another vote for Tommee Tippee / Lansinoh. Yes, the plastic wrappers are a pest and very un-eco, but I like to think that I off-set by using reusable nappies!

katiepotatie · 05/01/2009 20:36

Oooh !going to try those Lilypads though with baby #2,due in April

nellyup · 05/01/2009 20:41

I know you're not keen but honestly, IME the washable ones are far more absorbent than any paper ones if you're a big leaker (I was). And they don't scrunch up in your bra either - I used Bravado ones, don't know if they're still around. Really easy to wash, bung them in any old wash going on.

Only don't eat beetroot. Took me weeks to work out why they'd all gone pink

aurorec · 05/01/2009 20:41

Have a look at breastfeedingheaven.com they sell their own individually wrapped breast pads in boxes of 100 and they are great! They're really cheap too. I've always had loads of milk and have never leaked with them.

reluctantincubator · 05/01/2009 23:52

LOL at the beetroot coloured breastpads. Thanks for all the really unseful input and info. (once again MN rox!)

My plan of action (therefore) is to try the lily padz, which look really interesting and I love the fact they just stop you lleaking altogether by pinching the nipple, rather than absorb, it, and can be worn without a bra at night (dripping milk all over the bed clothes, pyjamas and pillows in the middle of the night has been a source of great irritation, but wearing a bra has been a pain. Then if they work reasonably well I might get some washables to soothe my conscience and stick to lanisoh for back-up (at least if they are indidvidually wrapped I can stick them in the bottom of the handbag until I need them!

I have just bought a box of morrisons own brand breast pads and they are really good. they are shaped and quite absorbent Re the lilypadz - i didnt get on with them. they were good for short periods but when i tried to wear them for a night out, they just couldnt cope with the amount of milk i leak and they came "unstuck". wouldnt trust them overnight tbh

treedelivery · 06/01/2009 00:06

I have the breastfeedingheaven ones and they seem like the mega bucks ones based on disposable nappies - only cheaper!!

Also I slept in a bravado bra and that was fairly comfy and stopped night time floods! Bit warm though.

reluctantincubator · 06/01/2009 00:16

thanks treedelivery - thats a really useful site actually - and now I want a moboleez hat....

Thats the problem with stuff - it leads to more stuff.....

treedelivery · 06/01/2009 00:25

Got all excited about their prices for pads but the postage is bonkers expensive!!

Jacksmama · 06/01/2009 00:30

Love the Bravado bras and pads. But ---- question for you co-sleeping breast-feeders - can you really sleep in a nursing bra every night?? I really can't. My girls have to breathe some time. So(since I have a dairy cow milk supply) I drip milk all over my nightie, DS, and the bed sheets... creating lots of wash...

reluctantincubator · 06/01/2009 00:36

no worries jacksmama - thats the problem I have and why I was looking for a solution. For me the leaking was so bad that bra-wearing in bed was the only option (slightly preferable to sodden wet sheets) but not fun either. Some of my vest tops with "inbuilt support" work as an alternative to nursing bras, as the in-built support is enough to hold pads in place but not as uncomfortable as wearing an actual bra and the cotton is a lighter material than the bras are made of.

I love the bravado ones but got two before I realised what size my (previously tiny A cups) were going to swell to (DD ) and as a rsult my medium sized bravado's are slightly small/tight, making sleeping in them not so much fun.

I had the same... tiny boobs before... and I'm sooooo enjoying my current size...

Hmmm, maybe I'll try vest tops.

A girlfriend of mine told me you can stretch a sports bra by wetting it and then pulling it over a chair back and letting it dry. Havn't tried it myself but maybe you could with your Bravados?
