Back to work in 10 days, baby won't take a bottle

I'm back at work in 10 days, breastfed dd2 is 8 months and will not take a bottle of ebm or formula. She's also not reliably eating much in the way of solids - maybe a quarter of a piece of toast, spoonful of veggies and a couple of spoons of yoghurt a day. We've tried every bottle and cup going and she will take a miniscule amount of milk from a tommy tippee type cup but nowhere near enough to sustain her at nursery all day. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Part of me thinks if there's no alternative she will either up her solids intake or take a bit more from a cup but I'm panicking now in case it doesn't happen.

Hi

DD was a bottle refuser, until we tried a nuby cup, they are soft spouted.

OK, seems I was wrong, we've tried NEARLY every cup going. Thanks scorpio, where did you get the nuby?

Just in local Boots. It's really soft on the top, not hard like other cups. Mimi seems to prefer the softness of the spout but in cup formation.

Mimi has started at nursery too - she appears to have less milk there than at home.

sorry tesco

2 of my DDs were bottle refusers. They gave in when they went to nursery (I think that one of them held out for a couple of days, the other one a bit longer).
Your DD wont let herself starve, so will drink when she doesnt have a choice.

Piccalilli2 · 05/01/2009 15:43

Cheers, will give that a go. Is Mimi getting on OK at nursery?

How often does she feed during the day? Some babies will just adjust their feeding schedule to work around their time with you. Also, who is giving your dd her bottle? You may need to completely leave the house and let your DP try - lots of babies won't take a bottle when they know their mummy is nearby because they just want the real thing. My DS was one of them! He only had a bottle a couple of times - but if I came home while he was mid-feed he immediately spat it out and wanted me! quite sweet really...

Yep though only goes one day a week, but fine, no issues.

I had a bottle refuser, she made up for it in what little she ate and drank during the day and by consuming more pre and after day care. I was it a tizz before she went though. The bottle that eventually cracked her was Dr Browns you can get them in mothercare.

Piccalilli2 · 05/01/2009 15:52

She generally has about 3 feeds a day which would be when she's at nursery. I will still feed her morning and night and could possibly squeeze in another quick one pre-bath if necessary.

We've tried Dr Browns - we really have tried all the bottles, no dice. I have tried leaving the house - my parents have had her for a morning a few times and I've gone out and left dh to it a few evenings but still no success. On the plus side, when I've left her with my parents she hasn't been upset just hasn't had much food/milk, which is OK for a half day but more of a worry for a full day at nursery 4 days a week.

DS never took milk, a bottle or a spouted cup, the only thing he would drink was BF or water from a "sippy cup" or a plastic beaker, both of which have no lids. Once he got to nursery he copied the other children and soon started on cows milk from a beaker!

MrsTittleMouse · 05/01/2009 16:02

We had a bottle refuser for a while. DH would get up with her in the morning (when she was at her hungriest) and basically didn't give up until she'd had a little bit of milk from the bottle. He had to do it for just over a week in order to get her to drink properly, but it was worth it. I had to be completely out of sight/sound/smell too - the slightest whiff that there could be something better (me!) and she would scream.

Haberman feeder was the only bottle dd would take at exactly that age. She took it immediately after desperately trying all other options.
