Amount of formula for a hungry 5 week old?!

Hi,

You may have seen a previous thread of mine about breastfeeding. Since then i've been having problems with my milk supply and its gone down considerably. That combined with a miserable and hungry baby, i decided to top DD up with formula. Now we're finding a system of one feed = bottle, next = breast etc works really well for us. However DD was 7lbs 6oz when born, dropped to 6lbs 9 and is now back to 7lbs 8ozs at 4.5 weeks. The recommended formula for a baby of her weight - 3 fl oz. Shes currently having 4 flz oz's as HV said to up it if she was hungry. However now 4 fl ozs doesnt seem to be enough - she still looks for more. DP gave her a 5 flz oz bottle while i was out (grrr!) but she drank the lot! How much can she have though, can she have the 5 fl ozs?!

HELP! thanks

imo if she's hungry let her have it! how long does she go between feeds? if she is hungry she will cry, do you really want to leave her hungry?

I would disagree. Babies find it easier to drink from a bottle so just becasue she finished a bigger feed doesn't mean that she needs it. Also, the more formula she has, the more your supply is going to be reduced. Why don't you try offering her breastmilk after the bottle - if she is genuinely hungry - she will take it. THis will also help increase your supply. I didn't read your previous post - sorry! - have you tried expressing already?

I've tried expressing - dont seem to get a lot out. I think DD has a better action than the pump and can get far more! We've been feeding her the 4 fl oz's every 4 hours as the tin suggests and if shes crying inbetween then i offer her breastmilk and that seems to be working.

Purepurple - of course i dont want to leave her hungry, no mother would want that. However i am a first time mum who has no experience hence me posting on here. I'm reading off the SMA tin how much shes meant to have - i dont know if i can give her more than they say or not.
