Self weaning?

Dd3 is 20 months and has been down to 1 breastfeed in the evenings for about 4 months now. Up till the last two weeks she was pretty keen and latched on happily taking variable amounts of milk - but alwasy latching well (She has been a total milk hoover since she was about 30 minutes old - very enthusiastic and accomplished ) This week she has been latching less well - making a lot of slurping noises, sucking on the nipple (ooouch) and then coming off the breast. Last night and the night before she really had very little. Today she's been a bit subdued - teething - and when I offered her milk she turned her head towards the breast but then declined to open her mouth. I tried both sides and cudddled her then tried again but she just wasn't having it. It wasn't that she wasn't thirsty or her mouth hurt I don't think because she then happily drank some juice from a beaker and went down ok.
I'm planning to offer her milk again tomorrow but if she won't have it then I think that's our lot. I think I'm ok with that - she's my last baby and it's a bit of a milestone.

Oh no - am crying now - please somebody tell me this is ok?

Oh poor you.
Always an metional time.
Just keep offering for a while and see how she takes it?

Thanks - it's stupid because I'd be really pleased if she self-weaned but at the same time it's quite hard to realise this mighht be it. Have had a good innings though - 42 months breastfeeding with three children.

Actually - working that out makes me feel better - I've more than done my bit!

you are amazing!

I should explain though that's 42 months over nearly 11 years - I've never tandem fed - now that is amzing! But thanks - have stopped blubbing now and am contemplating a nursing bra bonfire...the ones I have are so knackered though they're hardly worth burning!

My DS seemed to self wean and then started up again! I'm pregnant so I think my milk obviously changed and he didn't like it but he doesn't object now! If you're happy to give up now then that's great but you never know - it may just be a little break and she'll just ask for it again out of the blue like my DS did. Well done you for doing so well over the years!

NotanOtter · 02/01/2009 00:41

its great however you've achieved it!

Does anyone know how long I'll actually have milk for - considering how little she's had over the last few days?

Wow, congratulations on nursing for 20 months !!!

Of course missing one day is not necessary the end and she might ask again tomorrow. As your milk is very well established, hopeful your milk should stay for a fair while. Depends how often your toddler nurses of course. I have heard of mothers carrying on indefinately with one nurse a day.

All the best, it must be very bitter sweet to be at the end of a long breastfeeding relationship.

BabiesEverywhere · 02/01/2009 12:33

Don't forget a toddler can take in a lot of milk in a relatively short nursing session i.e. 2 to 5 minutes.

Northernlurker · 02/01/2009 18:31

Thanks - I'll see what happens shortly

Hi, just wanted to add that I felt vety upset when dd did this too. It was just over a year ago actually. She was 2.4 yrs. It is a massive change and is bound to make you feel a bit emotional.

I had milk for ages . Up until recently I felt fuller at night time.

Well dne you for feeding for so long .

Northernlurker · 02/01/2009 22:57

Well she latched on for a few seconds and sucked a bit but not properly then came off the breast. She seemed perfectly happy with that and did the same on the other side. So we had a lovely cuddle instead. I think I'll keep offering for a few more days but I think she's over it now. Ho hum.
