Looks like a cracked nipple...what do I do?

My ds2 is 13 months old and he's been teething and, I think, gnawing on me a bit . My left nipple looks like it has a crack and is VERY painful. I've (thankfully) never had anything like this before...what do I do? Will it heal itself if I just continue with the teeth gritting and toe curling?

have you tried all the creams etc?

theLoneFeeder · 30/12/2008 20:38

Haven't tried anything yet...was hoping it would fix itself . I have some lansinoh left over from the early days...would that help it?

yeah probably if I were you I would go into a chemist and ask them for some advice! Vaseline worked best for me in terms of soothing sore nipples!

If possible/comfortable change position. I have just had this with dd 15 mths, and fed her in the rugby hold until it healed. It only took a few days to right itself.

Thanks for the advice! I'll try some of the Lansinoh first. Not sure how very 'spririted' ds2 would take to rugby hold! Worth a shot though...

That Lanisnoh is great but I would lay off feeding on that nipple if you can and just express if the pressure builds up too much that's what I did and it healed within about a day.. hope this helps!!!

i have always avoided all nipple creams and let my nipples harden up. i found that my nipples can get sore when DD has a growth spurt and her mouth changes shape.
i would definatly just leave off feeding from it and just express a little bit of milk and let it dry on your nipples this can be the best cream.
are you sure your haven't got thrush or an infection? i would get it checked.
hope this helps

Assessment of the evidence for wound healing. Research shows that moist conditions promote healing best.

You have my sympathy, as I had a huge crack at the base of my nipple when dd was 12 months for the first time ever. It took about 10 days to heal, and was opened up every time I fed her. It gradually healed from the inside out, using jelonet and lansinoh. As she was not a young baby, I 'rested' that side overnight for 3 nights, and that seemed to help a lot.
