she screams so much when i feed her and I'M upright that she can't actually feed properly.

i've tried infacol in case it was reflux and that's made no difference. i've tried dark / quiet rooms and it doesn't seem to be environmental.

so seems to me that it could be that my milk comes out too quickly? does this sound plausible? my dsis says that she had the same problem.

if it IS the problem, what can i do about it, because it's simply not feasible to lie down every time i feed her!

HELP!!

Could she have thrush? My friends baby has had it twice and both times has screamed when she tried to feed him. If not thrush and you think it might be your milk coming too quickly have you tried expressing a little bit off before you feed her? This might reduce the pressure and the speed it comes out at. Just guessing, hopefully an expert will be along soon!

no, don't think she's got thrush as it's only the feeds where i'm sitting up that are a problem. so today, i did all the feeds lying down and she was fine.

i have problems expressing, to the point of nearly losing my milk when dd2 was in hospital. also, i need a way of feeding her when i'm out and about, which i am most days with the older dd.

Could you just express a bit off by hand first? If not then maybe just pop dd off until the letdown stops gushing and then put her on again?

hmm that's a good idea re waiting til after the let-down.

re hand expressing - do you get much out? i'm not sure i'd be able to do that in public, but would certainly help around the house.

can get loads, someone more senior should be able to do a link to handexpressing instructions. Some ppl swear by handexpressing. Must dash, baby has woken!

Hand expressing.

Have you tried a more reclined biological nurturing position?

Some mums find that taking baby off and letting the start of the let-down squirt into a muslin pressed firmly into the breast with the heel of their hand can help.

The most important thing is to make sure that her attachment is as effective as possible. Babies in a really good position can control the flow of the milk with their tongue, no matter how fast. It could be that she's grown a little and you might need to start with her a little further away from your breast so that she has to reach a bit further. Her top lip needs to just slide over your nipple with her mouth wide open and her head tilted backwards. If might be worth tracking down a breastfeeding expert to watch a feed, just to ensure there aren't any little tweaks you could make. Is there a group near you?

no groups near me but i'll experiment with her latch.

thank you very much for the links and suggestions.

If she is screaming when you try to feed her, could it be colic?
My little one had colic until she was 11 weeks old. She screamed so much that I thought I would lose the plot. And the sleep depravation is a killer.
I tried infacol, gripe water, anything I could lay my hands on! I believe that it was caused by trapped wind in my baby's tummy that she couldn't get rid of herself.
I found that if she had been in the car seat for a journey it was worse, because sitting in a bent position didn't allow her wind to release itself. On days when I didn't use the car seat, she was a lot better!
At 11 weeks it stopped overnight. He stomach muscles were mature enough that I could see her stain to pass the trapped wind, something she didn't do before.
I hope this helps!
