WHY WON'T MY 6 WEEK OLD TAKE MY EXPRESSED MILK FROM A BOTTLE?

I have managed to express some BM but am having a nightmare feeding her from a bottle. She starts out like she is drinking it then you look at the volume and it hasnt gone down.I am using avent teat 1.Any ideas?

Ds2 wouldn't take avent bottles, we were recommended NUK bottles by the SCBU nurse, and he was able to use them, as its the same action as BF.

AFAIK feeding from a bottle uses differetn mouth muscles to breast feeding.

It's like being able to swim breast stroke but not being able to swim backstroke! Two different skills and sets of muscles are used - and most peple can learn to do both - but some find one much easier than the other.

It doesn't mean she doesn't like the breastmilk - just that she doesn't know how to do it yet.

And remember that when she breast feeds - to a certain extent - the milk is "pushed out" of your milk ducts which is not at all like feeding from a bottle.

Turn the bottle upside down and see if the milk drips out of its own accord (IMO it prob should). If it doesn't think of swapping to a faster flow teat?

another vote for the NUK ones. I also found, in the beginning, they drank more from a bottle if someone else fed them (otherwise they wanted beast)

beast? breast!

avent bottle teats are quite rigid, and a lot of babies struggle with them

Thank you very much i am off into town so see if i can find a NUK bottle

Tommy tippee teats worked with my dd - they should fit in your avent bottle so try them too before buying new bottles! DD latched on as if she was breastfeeding. She did prefer breastfeeding though and rejected the bottle for a good few months.

I used a plastic syringe to get my daughter used to taking milk another way. I would squirt it into the corner of her mouth and she would swallow. After a few days I put the syringe in her mouth and she sucked it empty in about 2 seconds! After a few of those we moved on to teats and she was fine.
Good luck!

when weaning mine off the breast, the only bottle that would work was the NUK - bloody brilliant. It did takes AGES for her to get the hang of it. I would recommend that someone else (if poss) try and feed your little one. They may not take it initially, but they'll get so hungry that they eventually will. Good luck!

I use the "breastflow" bottles.... expensive, but ingenious. DS drinks from it while I'm at work (he's 12 weeks) but been drinking from bottle since about 3 weeks with DH.
