HELP!!! Have question re 5mo and EXTREME wakefulness

Hello I have a 5mo breastfed baby who has never really slept through the night. He did 3 nights ago, but for the last two he has been waking up LOADS and he seems to be really hungry.
During the day he seems to be too distracted to feed unless we are in a very quiet place and he has just )in the last 2/3 days started to be weaned , which he loves.....

Tonight we were going to try and not feed him if he wakes up.
What do you think?
Are we doing the right thing?
Advice please!!!

I am no expert and it is of course entirely up to you but I wouldnt attempt any form of sleep training as yet. He's still really young....

If he will go back to sleep without crying then fair enough I suppose, but I personally wouldnt leave a baby to cry.

Your baby sounds exactly like DS2 was (nearly 7 mo) who has never, ever slept through the night. Some nights he wakes up once but if he's a bit off colour (cold etc) then he wants to feed loads during the night. I personally don't worry about night feeds because I cosleep and have learned the fine art of bf a baby in my sleep but I totally appreciate that if you don't co sleep then having to physically get up to a baby in a cot is a different ball game.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

as I recall, 5mo is when ds's sleep went really really bad for a while, and experienced parents I spoke to said knowingly "oh yes - that 5 month hiccup". I think it's a classic time for wakefulness, because there's a growth spurt and a lot of development happening, so he may need those extra calories.

IMO, 5mo is too young for sleep training, and I would feed a hungry baby at night. But I couldn't manage sleep training ever with ds (he had more stamina than me), and his sleep has improved at his own pace ever since. It's really really hard when you're sleep deprived, but it won't last forever.
