Is (breast) milk twice a day enough at 16 months?

DD eats cheese, yoghurt, goats' milk on cereal, plenty of sardines (rich in calcium I believe) - she has a pretty varied, balanced diet I think. But only has breastmilk twice a day and no other type of milk to drink.

I've heard people say a pint a day of milk at this age - is that correct? Obviously I don't know how much milk she gets from the breast twice a day, but a pint sounds like a lot.

I only recently dropped her midday breastfeed, and I suppose would like reassurance that she's getting enough milk.

Thanks in advance.

My ds, same age (cows milk) has 7oz a day. He's never been too interested in milk so only has a cup before bed

Sounds fine to me. DS was only on 2 feeds a day from 13mo and weaned totally at 20mo. He has never drunk cows' milk but has other dairy products.

pint a day of milk can be in the form of cheese, yoghurt, goat's milk

It could be plenty and it's really impossible to say how much your LO would be taking at those 2 feeds.

The only recommendation in relation to milk after the age of 12 months is in relation to ensuring toddlers have sufficient calcium intake. However, the requirement is actually fairly low. The Food Standards Agency say that children between the ages of one and three need to consume an average of 350mg of calcium a day. If it was just coming from whole cow's milk then about 3/5 pint a day is needed. But yogurt, cheese etc count too, as well as non-dairy sources like sesame and of course breast milk . This has a list of calcium contents:

Calcium from human milk is absorbed over twice as well as calcium from cow's milk, so is like drinking double the amount .

Thanks everyone, that's really useful.
I didn't know about the calcium from human milk being absorbed twice as well as cow's milk. Great news!
