Advice please on teat size / how to slow down a furiously quick eater!

Can I pick your collective brains / draw on your wisdom about teat sizes please!

My 7 week old gulps through his bottles - (usually getting through 5 / 6oz in less than 10 mins). I'm still using Avent newborn teats - which I've been told are the slowest flow. I'm trying to slow him down by breaking up his feeds and giving him a soother, taking a break between every couple of ounces etc - but he's still ravenous and it doesn't seem to have any effect on his eating habits. His gulping is also giving him lots of wind, making him antsy (because he still thinks he's hungry at the end of a bottle) then knocking him out when it all hits him at once.

Do any of you have any experience with other teats which might be slower flow? or any other tips on slowing him down?

thanks!

I would try the nxt size up just to see if it might help. He should be on size 2 from a month old on.
Does he get frustrated when feeding?

How often is he going between feeds?

Maybe feed him more often. He sounds like a hungry baby. Maybe try hungry baby milk.

My dd gets like this at start of a bottle but does slow down half way through but thats coz she is real hungry.

thanks jadey.
he's on a routine, feeding more or less every 4 hours, then as long as he can go from 11pm through the night (which isn't long enough...) I split the feeds tho, so instead of giving him the whole bottle at one sitting he gets half about 30 mins later. I'd thought about hungry baby milk, but I've been told not to switch formula without talking to a doctor first. we're going to baby clinic tmrw so I'll ask them then. also, I upped his intake the otehr day and he's had diarrhoa (sp?) ever since - although doesn't appear sick, so I think its just his system getting used to the new levels. so I'm loathe to throw something else into the mix for him (and me) to deal with.
but I will try a bigger teat at the next feed and see if that helps.
argh. this is all such a minefield. please tell me it gets easier??!

Dd was like this and we changed to a varie flow teat. She was fine after that and wasnt so windy either.

are they made by avent? i don't think I've ever seen them, but will go searching.
tried him on no 2 teat this morning, but really didn't make any difference. he walloped through his food and was fast asleep 20 mins later. so much for his routine...

These Although we had Tommee Tippee they are the same thing.

The release the milk to the babyies sucking IYSWIM. They worked for us, dd couldnt get the milk out of the new born ones fast enough so we moved onto these.

I dont think there might be a whole heap you can do then other then stop and start with the milk and wind him more often like after every oz to prevent the build up of wind.

You dont have to ask hv to change milk. Its up to you but if you need reasurrence then ok. I do understand tho coz i was scared to change her milk but she was getting bad tummy on the milk she was on. Someone said changing her milk cant cause no more harm then what the milk she is on is doing to her already. Good point!
I have changed my dd 3 times trying to find the right milk and it never did her any harm or gave her tummy upsets & i never told hv at the time when i changed & when i did tell her after she didnt say nought.

If you do decide change to the hungry baby use the same brand ur using already it certainly wont cause that much trouble.
If you ask me tho he does sound like he is mega hungry and thats why he is gulping it down.

You could try a "comfort" formula for babies with discomfort from feeding... it is much thicker than normal formula and so they have to work harder to get it through the teat and it slows them down - altough you would need a bigger teat size; either size 2 or variable. It also helps with wind and poo!

My ds2 is on Aptamil Easy digest and has been from week 4 as he is a very hungry, windy baby. I use Tommee Tippee closer to nature bottles with a size 3 teat.
