ebm from sunday (8oz, was away from ds for the day) went to separate it into 2 bottles, swirled it round a bit and when i took top off it looked really curdled and smelled a bit of ds's sick. the more i swirled the less curdled and sicky it became. do you reckon its ok?

taste it

Lotster · 11/12/2008 19:44

Doesn't sound good!!

The taste test is a good way to know, assuming you know what your BM should taste like, but if it smells like that I'm sure you don't want to taste it, which probably give you your answer

the following is from a good guide on Babycentre:

You can store milk:

? At room temperature - not warmer than 77 degrees F/25 degrees C - for up to four hours

? In a coldbox with refreezable ice packs for up to 24 hours

? In a refrigerator with a temperature of 39 degrees F/4 degrees C or colder for three to five days

? In an older model single-door refrigerator with freezer compartment inside for two weeks.

Try it next time it's fresh, then you'll know for future ref, it's not yuk. Mine tasted like a slightly sweeter soya milk taste.

Really helps for if/when you introduce formula at any point too. You can taster them and know which is the most similar to yours and least likly to get rejected IYSWIM?

If in doubt, chuck it out.

mawbroon · 11/12/2008 21:25

plusone - you might have excess lipase in your milk which can cause it to go rancid when stored.

have a read here and see what you think

plusoneFoggyChristmasEve · 11/12/2008 21:41

thanks everyone for those thoughts, an interesting article mawbroon

it didnt exactly smell sour, just a strong smell, like ds's sick- which i guess is just milk so it must be ok? when ds is sick its quite lumpy, like the creamy bit of the milk, presume that is normal too? hadnt thought about it before

did your ds drink it?

The lumps in the sick are bits of partially digested milk I think.

plusoneFoggyChristmasEve · 12/12/2008 08:02

not yet, he is due to have it today as i am taking ds1 to the panto. this morning i was all set to chuck it but when i checked it this morn it seemed completely fine. i now wonder if the smell had anything to do with it being in a bottle with a stopper rather than a teat?
