My 9 week old DD is getting more and more fussy on the breast - at night in bed she feeds fine and dosn't spit up much; and if I get her when she's just woken up she is also fine, but at other times she gets frantic and screams, she will feed for a few mins then pull off and scream, and then latch on desperately and scream again. I have tried feeding her lying down which worked at first but not now; and infant gaviscon for reflux but it made her very constipated and she screamed from that - the doctor said the only way to avoid this was give her it six times a day in six bottle feeds! This is awefull as I have struggelled to get to all breast feeding and this will certainly end that. I am now going to try cutting out all dairy as this has been suggested to me - tonight she brought up all breast feed and ebm she has taken which is so upsetting! She doesn't cry when when spits up - could I also try giving her half the dose of Gaviscon as maybe six times a day is too much but if I gave her 3 doses a day she would get some benefit? For long periods she is so happy and plays with toys and grabs at things and smiles to herself already, but BF makes her cry and I feel so bad. I am so desperate not loose night times in bed together feeding and BF all together

Sounds like you are doing really brilliantly.

how are you doing tenacityflux?

The weight gain is absolutely brilliant - you are doing a fabulous job!

I'd say to try the massage before the screaming starts - try and head it off at the pass!

Hello, I think we're doing better,no, we are doing better, she has done a few before bedtime feeds quietly, not tonight, but she has a bottle of emb if she won't and then formula if she gets through all that and wants more - and I express if she dosn't feed, so that's only an oz or two of dreaded sma at most. Music TV and massage is also working, thank you, and we have moved her bath and bed earlier and that has also helped - I have been using a musical toy and sitting with my hands on her while she's in her cot until she sleeps so she'll one day link the music to bedtime - it's such a learning curve, but I am so happy she is gaining weight anf we are back to 99% BF!

Had a terrible evening - DD is having real problems feeding again and no one has any idea why or can offer me anything which works All day she refused to BF, fussing, coming off after one suck and screaming, not really feeding but just mouthing my nipple - Finally at lunch I tried to feed her and she screamed and screamed hysterically for 20 mins, then when calm fed for 10; she slept for an hour in the sling in the morning and for 20 mins only in the afternoon, then in the evening would not feed, she got upset, I got upset;finally we gave her a bottle of ebm and then formula; put her to bed awake after her bedtime routine - then she was awake for AN HOUR - as I and DH took it in turns to sit with her, not crying but just awake and yawning; then she began hysterical screaming, I finally got her calm and she fed for 10 mins,we put her down, and finally she went to sleep. She had been awake for 5 hours, at her age, is this normal?!I get so upset, I'm so tired, even thinking of seeing a sleep specialist.

my ds is 9 weeks and now often awake for 5 hours or even longer. Today he has only had 3 20 minute naps (but yesterday he slept all day). I think this crazy variability (while maddeening for me) is just the way it is with him. I had the screaming at the breats untill his tongue tie was cut last week. Now its perfect. Have you looked for tongue tie?

tenacityflux · 17/12/2008 22:46

What do you look for in tounge tie? Wouldn't it have been this way from day one not starting some weeks in?
