I gave birth to dd2 a month ago and started breastfeeding since I fed my dd1. I had completely forgotten how bl*y painful it was!!!

Thankfully I have since remenbered that the pain will pass but oh my goodness it's not much fun at the moment.

For something so "natural" it can feel anything but.

eemie · 15/03/2003 20:11

JoPat, just reading your message made all my toes curl and my eyes water.

Have you found Lansinoh nipple ointment? Protective and non-allergenic.

I used to wonder if my daughter would be emotionally scarred from having tears dripping on her every time she had a meal.

jasper · 15/03/2003 20:14

Jopat please take a look at this great thread which helped me enormously. Baby has just turned one and I have gone from being a reluctant breastfeeder to Crazy Breastfeeding Lady.

Congratulations on your baby girl.

ow ow ow. I remember clinging onto dh screaming when ds1 latched on. Ds2 hurt a bit but we got to the non-painful lovely bit much faster.

mands1 · 17/03/2003 20:05

I had a really bad experience with my first so much so i was determind not to even try with my second (which i feel really angry about). After loads of advice and little help from health officals i gave up.This made me feel really bad about myself as they put so much pressure on me.

Anyway it turns out later that my ds was tounge tied and this probably caused my problems.Reason i am so bitter is the people who "advised" me are now the so called "tounge tie" specialiest.

pupuce · 17/03/2003 21:59

Jo Pat - has a trained breastfeeding counsellor checked your positioning??? Or has anyone checked that you do not have thrush????

JoPat · 21/03/2003 16:48

As I had hoped the pain has gone!!!!!

Dd still mucks about but latches on much quicker. Hurray for perseverance.

Am I the only person in the world who didn't find breastfeeding hurt? Yes, I got that latch-on shooting pain with the first suck or two, but the actual feed never hurt and my nipples were unscathed. I'm not showing off, honest, but surely I can't be the only one? My ds went to sleep after about 30 seconds sucking, but that was a different problem altogether!

Lindy · 28/03/2003 15:59

No you're not the only one - I usually steer clear of these threads because I don't feel I can contribute anything constructive but I never felt any pain - even the initial 'latching-on', I did have difficulty getting DS to start for the first few days (but what no one told me until I read it on Mumsnet was that was probably due to him being an emergency c/s and my having a general aneasthetic) - anyway, I never felt 'anything' at all too be honest and when I stopped I just went 'cold turkey' with no problems at all.

jenz · 11/04/2003 19:01

i found the first 20/30 secs agony for 3/4 weeks even though my baby was latching on properly and positioned correctly.anyway i persevered and am really glad i did, because now its easy and doesnt hurt at all

morocco · 12/04/2003 00:30

No pain for me but a b*y struggle getting ds tolatch on the first week - looking back he was just as doped up as I was after emergency c section.
But don't worry - i canèt be too smug cos I got horrendous pain later when I got thrush. Prob was I had no idea at all that it was possible to get thrush on my nipples - I mean who would? - and cos Id heard so much about pain when breastfeeding I thought it was just normal and suffered for weeks without even going to the doctors.
So now I hijack every bfeeding thread just to make sure noone else suffers like that - not that mumsnetters seem to lack knowledge about anything. If only Id found you all earlier . . .

I never suffered any pain while breast feeding my dd. I remember the lady in the next bed to me saying how brave I was to be b/feeding as it was so sore, (she was in with her 2nd ds who was bottle fed, I'm guessing she had tried the first one with b/feeding and didn't like it)and I remember thinking what on earth is she talking about?
the only problem I had was my breasts were huge and dd was small so I had to lay her on a pillow to feed as she was practically suffocating if I held her up to my breast, midwives words not mine and mw suggested the pillow as a better way for dd to feed which did work, problem was I never mastered how to feed her without her lying on a pillow so I always had to make sure I timed going out round about feeds as I couldn't feed her outside the house without taking a pillow with me, lol.

nits · 19/04/2003 12:46

I didn't experience any pain with dd1 but dd2 had a few problems. When it came to dd3 just 9 weeks ago i was in tears in the ward, the pain was unbearable and I insisted on wearing nipple shields (mothercare's ones seem to be like armoured plating but worked wonders!). Thankfully after four weeks the pain subsided and now dd3 is feeding well if not frequently which is tiring but not painful anymore.

I...think...my..problem..was...the..first...few..days...when..my...milk...hadn't...come..in....My...little..boy...was...desperately..trying..to...get...something...out....with..no...joy..

When...the...milk...finally...did....come...it...hurt...so...much...and...when...the...bf...counsellors...said...it...was...because...we...(meaning...ME)weren't...doing...it...right...I...could...have...strangled...them!!...I...successfully...breastfed...for...six...months.

I...am...currently...trying...to...get...my...boyfriend...to...lactate

I...have...heard...that...it...takes...six...months...of...nipple...sucking.

LOL Bobbins! My DH actually wanted to b/feed which was so annoying in the early days when I was really tired and at times crying with either frustration or pain and he would say "Ah it looks so lovely, I would love to do that... blah, blah, blah ...". Let us know how you get on thought, it would be so handy if men could do milk too!
