Switching to cow's milk at 12 months (from FF)

Do you just go for it, or make the switch over the course of a few days?

Wondering whether I should buy one last box of Aptamil just in case?

Also, should I expect/look out for any reaction?

My hv advised me just to go for it which i did. My ds had no reaction at all but wise to look out for i would have thought if you haven't used it in cooking yet.

I just went for it with DD, she raised an eyebrow, hesitated for a second (literally) and couldn't get enough.

Go for it.

MrsSprat · 07/12/2008 23:47

thanks, sounds promising. Have just spotted a potential grammatical cock-up in my thread title. Of couse I might be planning to milk my fictional organic cow in the garden, on an exclusive basis.

Damn my throbbing head

Think Im just going to go for it next month with DD. Fingers crossed.

Another question - did everyone stop using bottles too? Have been told its best to switch to a cup at 12 months? What cup did you use if you did?

OLIVIASMAMA · 07/12/2008 23:58

Oooh no - I didn't do that.

Funny though, DD has juice and water in a cup (cheapie from Tesco) but I automatically still put her milk in a bottle.

I think I'll try the beaker now you mention it.

Kelix · 08/12/2008 10:10

I thought about keeping bottles for her milk but apparently its bad for thier teeth? Im sure another few months wouldnt be too detrimental. Might try cup/beaker and see how that goes then take it from there. DD doesnt seem to mind change too much so fingers crossed

Makes me laugh tho one day little ones are on formula or breast fed - next on cows milk! Maybe they are happy of a change tho. Formula and breast milk tastes yucky - yes I have tried them both lol

We went straight for the switch and it was fine. A friend of mine mixes half and half.
We kept milk in a bottle because I still warm it, but now (at 16m) have put ds on avent sports magic cup thing and taken valve stopper out. He has been drinking water and squash from a trainer cup from about 6 months.

CatchaChristmasStar · 08/12/2008 10:28

I switched straight onto cows milk from formula just after dd's first birthday. No problems at all, in fact, I think she prefered it! She's 18 months and still has between 2-3 9oz bottles of warm milk a day. I think I'll buy a cup this week to see if I can gradually wean her off her bottle though.

I have no intentions of stopping her milk intake though. My HV's all told me to stop her on her milk and bottle a while ago. I've ignored them as it's so good for her and she loves her milk, so I'll keep going as long as she wants it.

My ds has only just given up his bottle as came up to 3 and it was a big ordeal for 1st few days. Managed to coax him eventually with a 'special' cup of his choice with a curly straw but i have to be honest and say he doesn't drink more than half a cup now.

NewKnickersFromSantaOnMaHead · 09/12/2008 03:03

I just went for it. Threw all her bottles away one night after we ran out of formula and went onto cows milk in a 'big girls cup' She never complained or anything which I was quite shocked by.

A timely thread - I've been thinking about this myself as DS turned 1 a couple of weeks ago. With DD, I switched to cow's milk in a cup at a year old and it was fine but DS will not drink water from a beaker so I think he might be a bit trickier. Also, I did things v much by the book with DD whereas DS will be last child and I don't mind baby-ing him a bit longer !

I was all set to make the switch this week when tub of formula ran out but have had 3 shocking nights with DD who has an ear infection and so decided I couldn't face creating any more potential disruption at the mo ... so ended up doing emergency dash to Sainsbury's for formula this afternoon and will now delay the inevitable for another couple of weeks!
