electric breast pump recommendations?

I hear that the medula is a good one, but expensive.
Looking in ebay but still about £20. Perhaps I am being cheap, cos I think that is a good price for a medula, but I am not sure how much I will be using it so don't want to pay out too much. Espesh as have a manual one already that works fine but takes longer.

Any recommendations for good, but less expensive ones?
Cheers

Contact you local hospital, they may well hire them quite cheaply (most do). Personally I never got on with pumps and just hand expressed - you can get quite good/quick results once you get the hang of it.

twinklingfairy · 06/12/2008 10:28

Both brililant sugestions, but I live in the back of beyond and I doubt they will hire out, but I will ask. I could be wrong.
oh, I found hand expressing soooo frustrating, got more all over my hands than anywhere near a bowl!

Depends what you want it for? Daily expressing at work or occasional use?

whomovedmychocolate · 06/12/2008 18:45

Buy some breast shells. When you feed on one shell collect on the other. Saves any faffing with expressing an I regularly get at least 100ml on the breast shell side.

whomovedmychocolate · 06/12/2008 18:47

Well you can always hire them direct from the companies that sell them (just google breast pump hire.) You normally have to pay about £20 for the kit bits you can't return but it can work out if you just want to try it.

OR what I did when I wanted a posh medela one was bought it from Amazon US. In the end I changed my mind and cancelled but it was about half the UK cost (mind you currency rates are much crapper now)!

LaTurkey · 06/12/2008 19:01

Ameda Lactaline brilliant. Though expensive.

JacksFirstChristmasMama · 06/12/2008 19:10

medela pump in style. definitely worth it

dizzyjingles · 06/12/2008 19:16

not the medela swing though, its noiser than a bloody dyson

mygreatauntgriselda4christmas · 06/12/2008 19:18

Avent Isis IQ (single or double) - brilliant

I have used mine for 14 months, twice a day at work - its fast and fab

Costly though - £85 squids

asuwere · 06/12/2008 20:09

Avent Isis IQ is on Amazon just now for £22 delivered! Bargain!

And agree with dizzy - medela swing is noisy, does the job though; I used it full time at work for 5months

OhLittleBitShyOfBethlehem · 06/12/2008 20:46

I agree with pump in style. Tried medela swing and got nothing, zilch, nada . How can 2 pumps be so different - esp as they're the same make?!?!

twinklingfairy · 06/12/2008 22:47

Just occasional use really. But I want it to be speedy or I just won't find/make the time. I keep forgetting then worry that I won't get enough to make the whole sterilising, time pumping worth it. Figure I managed great with the pump in the hospital, any time of day, maybe it would work as well at home?
Daily would be good so that DH can give a feed but also want a stock so that I can let my mum do a few feeds so I can do thigs with DD.
Sorry prob way TMI but I am a bit of a rambler.
So Medela pump in style seems to be the best?

There is one on ebay at mo, but all it says is medela mini electric breast pump.
How would I know if that is the pump in style or the swing??

Medela swing is pants - a few weeks ago, it started smoking...

TheProvincialLady · 07/12/2008 19:40

A medela mini electric was very good for me for occasional use - bit on the noisy side to say the least, but very good value. It is a completely different machine to the pump in style and the swing. Have a look at www.expressyourselfmums.co.uk (sorry haven't time to do a proper link) to see what the differences are.

I did not get on at all with the pump in style and found it unnecessarily huge. I barely got a drop out with it, whereas the ameda lactaline was briliant for me. As I say, different pumps seem to work for different folk.

determination · 07/12/2008 23:21

I would have to 2nd the pump in style i loved it.

Great sale on pumps here though

Claudia6251 · 08/12/2008 00:02

I would also agree with the previous post - I use the Medela mini electric pump which is great, yes a little noisy but not a problem and it takes up little room and easy to travel with. It is however £50. If you can get it on Ebay it would be good. I am on my third baby now and have used this pump for 2 of the babies. If you are proposing to breastfeed for 6 months + I would definitely say that this pump is a good investment.

AlexanderPandasmum · 08/12/2008 00:13

Ameda Lactaline is a fab pump for moderate to heavy use - saw me through 6 and a bit months of exclusively pumping for ds. You can single or double pump. I got mine from express yourself mums - here. You can also use batteries (AA) if you are wanting to use it somwhere without a plug socket.
