desperate to find right teat for 2 week old - PLEASE HELP

2 week old ds2 has always been on bottle. Has a hard suck but cant seem to latch on properly. currently on avent but have also tried NUK orthodontic ones.

when you put it in his mouth he sort of meses about with it, and takes a little while to actually latch on it. THen when hes sucking he doesnt have a seal around the teat along his bottom lip so makes loud slurping/sucking noises which also means he does lose milk out of his mouth.

health visitor came round yesterday to watch him feed and to advise what teat to try next but she was so unsympathetic and said i cant expect a 2 week old baby to feed properly on a bottle!! My ds1 had no prob so dont see why you cant 'expect' it at 2 weeks. Any one had this problem and found a solution? I dont want to go trying every single teat esp as i dont know where to start. He does get quite windy so really want an anti colic.

Anyone??

Try MAM as they are flat so DS won't need to curl his tongue to get a goos suck going, as to anti colic most have the air going thru the milk so it can be fizzy, Dr Browns / Tommee Tippee have the ones with the straw up the middle to stop this and the MAM teats work with those too.

MatNanPlusTINSEL · 05/12/2008 13:14

The HV sounds useless.

mad4mybaby · 05/12/2008 13:16

she has always been good with ds1 but i just wanted her out of my house, made me feel like a kid. When you say flat, do you mean like orthodontic? He doesnt like orthodontic teats, even tried ortho dummy and wont take it (does have a dummy)

No tongue tie or anything preventing him getting it in his mouth properly is there?

My DD had the whole of the teat in her mouth, not just the end bit IYKWIM. And if she struggled, I would lay her a lot flatter.

agree, HV sounds useless....

mad4mybaby · 05/12/2008 13:21

no i worried about tongue tie but got doc to double check and she said he's fine.

he does it with his dummy aswell

Agree MAM ones are very good - baby has to 'work' the teat like a nipple. They're not flat exactly but, kind of, if you pinch the aven one towards the middle on each sire they sort of look like that
Oh and [slap] your HV

thefunkypea · 05/12/2008 13:24

I had problems until I tried Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature. They're shaped like a boob and did the trick for my dd

hazeyjane · 05/12/2008 13:25

We used dr browns for dd1 who did have a tongue tie, and kept slipping off all the avent ones, they are longer and softer, and she seemed to be able to suck them better, they are also anti colic. I think they do them singly if you wanted to try one, rather than buy a whole pack.

Also, what size teat are you using, sometimes if milk is gooshing out it can be because the flow is too fast.

good luck

mad4mybaby · 05/12/2008 13:27

no he's on a slow flow. The whole 'feeling like a boob' thing, is this relevant for a baby who has never been breast feed?

Do MAM teats fit avent bottles anyone know?

Dunno - i just know that my lo had terrible wind problems with Avent and Dr Browns and the only thing that stopped all that was changing to Closer to nature

mad4mybaby · 05/12/2008 13:43

is closer to nature the short but really fat one?

nappyaddict · 05/12/2008 13:45

DS finally settled on a mixture of munchkin bottles (from mothercare), TT closer to nature bottles and boots orthodontic teats.

MatNanPlusTINSEL · 05/12/2008 17:54

Yes, look down the page for ULTIVENT MAM fit Avent and Dr Brown bottles

The MAM teats are similar in shape to Avent dummies.

Money off Voucher for a MAM bottle

Yes the TT-C2N are squat and very soft.

They only fit in the TT C2N bottle.

mad4mybaby · 05/12/2008 18:39

i see the closer to nature the teat is alot longer than the avent one... do you think that is a good thing or a bad thing for my ds? thanks for voucher

MatNanPlusTINSEL · 06/12/2008 13:31

They are certainly more squashable tho i cared for twins and the girl squeezed them closed when she sucked so we moved her to Dr Browns and she was fine, he used the TT-C2N without issues.

You can just get a pack of MAM Ultivent and a pack of Dr Brown teats to try in you Avent bottle, but give them a day or 2 each of use to see if it is better for your DS.

mad4mybaby · 07/12/2008 12:01

well he certainly latches on fab on tommee ones.. only prpb is milk seems to come out too quick, it is a slow flow...

If he has had to suck hard for little return but now has better return then he will be getting more milk, he will adjust.

Try feeding him in a more upright position if he is spluttery.

mad4mybaby · 07/12/2008 19:38

he ha now been on these since yesterday lunch time.. how long would you give them to adjust? I only bought 2 and struggling to keep up with the wash/sterile but have wasted loads on bottles so in 2 minds wether to go and buy some more of these or not..

How is DS doing on the C2N teats now Mad4MB?

mad4mybaby · 10/12/2008 09:06

erm was ok except HV told me to make teat hole bigger (long story) anyway milk comes out too quick. He has been put on gaviscon which make the milk thicker so abit better but still has wind problems, i tried dr browns yesterday but he didnt get a drop out of it on number 1 teat, have just put a thead on asking people who use dr brown with gaviscon which number they use and im going to go out and try to find a quicker teat.

c2n are lovely bottles though! ds was fab at latching! Lovely to hold aswell!

Try the fast flow C2N teat.

With Dr Browns we had the Y cut teats for cereal & thicker feeds.
