Anyone else's child never unlatch?

Just idle curiosity, not wanting to change it.

DS (7month) has never once let go of the boob himself. DD was BF and she would always relax her mouth when she fell asleep feeding so the breast would fall out iyswim.

DS somehow manages to maintain suction even when asleep. Has done this often for a full nap (those early days when they fall asleep on your lap feeding and you daren't move an inch in case they wake up) and even for a good few hours at night - ie will fall asleep feeding, wake up 4hrs later and he is still asleep and attached!

Was wondering if he is some sort of freak how common this is?

Yep, both of mine are like that - HV swears it never happens

sweetkitty · 04/12/2008 22:13

Very rarely will DD3 unlatch well now she does during the day to have a look around then latch back on but at night usually I have to unlatch her myself.

Poledra · 04/12/2008 22:13

DD1 did it but not the other 2 (perhaps because they got fewer chances, mind)

littlelamb · 04/12/2008 22:17

Yep, ds is 6 months and very rarely unlatches himself. It drove me mad in the early days as I was convinced he was still hungry all the time and he was on the boob constantly, literally all night and most of the day but now I just stick my little finger in to break the latch. It doesn't wake him up and we are all much happier as a result

aurorec · 04/12/2008 22:27

Both of mine did/do that.

DS manages to smile at the boob (so cute) but when I try to pull away he immediately latches back on. I have to do the finger thing too!

arthymum · 04/12/2008 22:30

Yes, mine does this too! And has recently developed a cunning head turn that makes it very difficult for me to slip a finger in to unlatch him!

mumtomilkmonster · 04/12/2008 22:44

Mine too ! She's even started grabbing hold of my finger when I try to detatch her - she does the head turn too.

wuglet · 05/12/2008 15:11

Oh good glad it's not just mine then

Makes me even more gutted I have never managed to get him to take a dummy - presumably wouldn't be losing it all night long.

DD never did and DS, 8 weeks, now also doesn't unlatch unless he grins (v. sweet) and falls off. Has taken a while to work out when he's finished feeding and is just sucking but think I've worked it out now.

I also have an incredible latching child! I was really worried in the early days because he never came off like all the literature said he would, and he never ever had that milk drunk look that they talk about. I fretted about when to change sides etc etc , but it all worked out fine, he is perfectly well nourished!!

Even now aged three, sometimes, he just wants to feed forever. If the circumstances are right (eg, he is not ill or trying to go to sleep or whatever) then I tickle him. It make him open his mouth and I quickly get him off and distract him with something else.

yes still at ten months. its unbearable!

SparklyGothKat · 06/12/2008 18:14

callum doesn't unlatch, I have unlatch him and quickly put his dummy in, or he would feed all day and night. He is 14 months now
