TEETHING BF BABY WON'T TAKE CALPOL!

My son is teething and is in pain but hates the paracetamol that my GP gave him (medinol) I've tried it from a spoon, a little cup and a syringe/pippette but he just ends up with a sticky face! Does anyone know if there's any pain relief that can be given with his expressed bottle, like a powdered paracetamol? We've tried the teething powders but they upset his tummy due to the lactose.

Umm, just measure the liquid paracetamol into the ebm bottle? Or will he twig to the taste? The other thing I swear by is Anbesol liquid. You dab it onto your finger and then rub onto their gums works in about two minutes and is amazing stuff. I've used it myself on many an occasion {smile]

i don't know of any powdered paracetamol, but there is a tablet that dissolves called disprol

usually found at the chemist.
if not you can get paracetamol suppositories called alvedon but they are very expensive. (around £20!!) but you can get them on prescription.

Thanks so much! I bought the Anbesol today and will try it tonight, it's tastes really bad though so I may have a bit of a struggle. Disprol sounds great too, I saw some other soluble products in Boots but wondered whether you can dissolve them in expressed breast milk? Thought I'd see if anyone on MN has experience of this before I buy as I've lost count of the money I've wasted on stuff I can't use or he won't take!

£20 for paracetamol suppositories

I'm Holland and liquid paracetamol is prescription only, suppositories are the norm and cost about 2 euros for 10! I could send you some if you like...

DD was prescribed some liquid once and it was hellish, I feel for you!

is it just that he doesn't like it?

both my kids have hated calpol as babies but I kinda put it on a spoon waited for them to cry and shoved it in and waited till they swalllowed it. Its hard because they really don't like it but the medicine is for their own good.

my dd now 3 loves calpol she kinda cottoned on to he sweetness!

medinol is one of the few that ds did like. but anyway i never found paracetamol helped with temperatures which is what he mainly needed drugs for. get the ibupofen with the syringe thingy, shove spout in corner of mouth directed inside cheek towards molars. voila.

if you squirt it straight in he will cough it back up again, similar prob using spoon.

ladylush · 03/12/2008 21:57

how old is he?

ladylush · 03/12/2008 21:58

Is he weaned yet?

MrsBadger · 03/12/2008 22:12

dd was a calpol nigthmare

we gave up and used bonjela - at least then there;s nothing to sick up or spit out

eventually you can mix calpol into plain yog and they yum it up

gillythekid · 04/12/2008 13:34

He's 19 weeks and not yet weaned, might try the ibufrofen as they have some in Boots thats for 3 months +. Thanks Norktastic, really kind of you, I'll look you up if we get desperate but I think I should be able to get it on prescription.

My dd was a nightmare to get Calpol into her, I resorted to putting it in her ebm, seemed to work fine.

Ime Ibuprofen reduces temp for a longer period of time, so less struggling with an oral syringe.
