Is it unlikely to be mastitis is I don't have a high temperature?

Hi, I am breastfeeding my 2 week old dd and developed a very sore breast yesterday evening. Last night I was achy and shivery and felt miserable so I suspected mastitis. I took my temperature and it was normal so I took paracetamol and went to bed with a hot water bottle. I felt better this morning although the breast is still very sore but went through a bad patch this afternoon where I was shaky and headachy. Still no temperature though. Does it sound like it could be mastitis? The breast is very tender and there is a little lump (blocked duct??) but I am feeding from that side and it hasn't got any worse.

COuld be the start of it - temp. is a sign of infection but you could be tottering on the edge of it. Keep draining/massaging the breast. I think if it goes on for more than 24 hours you should get to GP incase you need ABs.

get it checked out - see gp asap. I did before I got a temp and she said well done for coming in early and catching it right away. I got abx and it cleared up quickly. If you leave it, it just gets worse and yucky. Go to gp first thing tomorrow

hi suiledonn , sounds like it is a blocked duct which can lead to mastitis if not cleared.

there is more information on kellymom with advice on how to clear it.

hopefully you won't need any antibiotics (and if there is no temperature or red veined areas on your breast then it's unlikely that there is an infection) as these can bring their own problems like thrush.

I hope things are going well otherwise

how did you get on suiledonn?

suiledonn · 02/12/2008 19:56

Hi, sorry didn't get a chance to reply for the last couple of days. I went to bed again with hot water bottle and took paracetamol and by next morning felt a lot better. Let dd feed a lot from that side and it sorted itself out. I think the other symptoms are just because I am completely exhausted!!! Thanks everyone.

Good for you! Glad to hear that all is well

Suiledonn - same thing happened to me on Saturday! I rang NHS Direct - they advised paracetemol, a warm compress on the sore spot and to try savoy cabbage leaves on the breast. (Vein of leaf needs to be bruised). The paracetemol did wonders and I stopped shivering very quickly. I also fed LO under arm so that his chin was nearer the blocked duct. It cleared up pretty quickly. I smelt cabbagey for a few days though!
