Natural term breastfeeders - how interested was your dc in solids after 1?

DD is 16 months and doesn't eat a lot. She usually has a bit for breakfast, then not much through the day and a big portion for tea. She bfs at least 4 times a day but often more. I know the last three months of teething/illness we've had will have impacted on her interest in food, but I'm just curious about other people's experience. Thanks

I post this and she's just scoffed 3 raisin scotch pancakes for breakfast. Obviously she was bored of all my morning offerings!

did not breastfeed, but DD did not really eat meals until 18 months or so, and did not actually ask for food or say she was hungry until around aged 2. everytime she was poorly or cut a tooth, like your DD, she had a week or two off meals. it is irritating, but as long as getting milk, i tended not to worry too much

One of my DSs was 14 months old before he could be bothered with solids and even then it was tiny amounts. Another ds was 13 months. So long as they're weeing and pooing and growing then there's nothing to worry about.

I find it incredible the size we can grow our babies on breast milk alone. Fantastic!

I only BF until 13 months, and Ds loved his spag bol from 7 months, but just wanted to say how much I like the phrase "Natural term breastfeeders". It's new to me, I'll have to remember that one!

Not want you want to hear, but dd is 5 and still isn't much into this food lark.
(still bf)

CharCharGabor · 29/11/2008 09:47

Thanks guys. She loves the taste of food, just not interested in actually eating much! She must be about 24lb now. I find it incredible too Spidermama. Was DD more of a grazer then lulumama? DD seems to prefer to have small snacks throughout the day rather than a big lunch.

I wasn't really much of an eater as a child Bucharest so I wonder if DD will be like that as well. She definitely prefers milk over solids.

My ds1 was always a big fan of food
my friend's dd did not really eat a darn thing till she was about 2
she was ex bf and a whopping size, very healthy young girl
my friend just kept offering and not being too wound up about it

RockinSockBunnies · 29/11/2008 19:42

My DD honestly wasn't fussed by food until at least 15 months (I bf til she was 2 and a half). At the time I used to worry, but have no idea why as she was very chunky and healthy - I just fretted!

Her eating improved a little when she went to nursery full-time at 16 months. Now she's nearly 8 and eats a wide-variety of foods.

I'd just try and relax and go with the flow. Let your DD decide when she's ready. Otherwise she'll pick up on any vibes and food can become a battleground.

whomovedmychocolate · 29/11/2008 19:50

Till 22 months DD was totally uninterested in food and would eat a desultory pea if prompted at dinner time and then chuck the rest around. She's now 25 months and regularly eats two waffles plus a banana for breakfast and goes on from there (together with three breastfeeds a day ).

CharCharGabor · 29/11/2008 20:46

Thankyou! Well today she's eaten 4 1/2 raisin pancakes for breakfast (), an oatcake, a handful of raisins, another pancake and a big slice of frittata for tea with a kiwi fruit for afters. When I write it down it doesn't sound that bad at all. I am amazed at the speed she puts a kiwi away. I peel it and cut it in half and she eats each half in about 3 seconds! Sounds like she's similar to most other toddlers then. I don't know why I worry at all, she's a good weight and doing really well. I try to relax about it but every so often a little niggle comes

Oh it's so great to read this! My DS eats breakfast OK, but other meals are a bit hit and miss. He goes to nursery and scoffs lunch/pud as well as snacks on those days (2.5 days) so I hope that's when he gets his protein requirement in... I thought he was being picky/fussy about what he ate, but guess he's actually not that bothered about eating. At least I can stop feeling guilty that I didn't stick with BLW (went with mashed foods) as I wondered if that was the cause of this. But he certainly wants to keep up with his milk...

NumptyMum · 29/11/2008 20:55

Oh, and DS is 15mo. Very active!

CharCharGabor · 29/11/2008 20:57

DD is very active as well NM, she even moves in her sleep! Guess we're going to have to go with the flow and let them lead the way. I've always figured that DD knows what she needs and trusted her on that. BLW or mashed food, obviously some dc just prefer the milk

Just spotted this, for interest:

CharCharGabor · 29/11/2008 21:07

Thanks for that, NM. I used kellymom for loads of advice when DD was younger, didn't think to check it now. Doh! It is quite reassuring.
