Does anyone give their LO any other milk apart from breast/cows milk ?

My 16 month old was lactose intolerant and had Neocate till 6 months. Then when we tried regular formula at 6 months he could digest it OK but developed mild eczema on his face. Over the last couple of weeks he has had a bad chest infection and given dairy produces a lot of mucus, I cut out his (cows) milk and just gave him a lot of other fluids. He is an excellent eater so I wasn't worried about any diestary defficiencies. Since dropping the cows milk his eczema has practically disappeared so I would like to eliminate all cows milk products from his diet on a permanent basis. Does anyone have experience of giving their little ones any other milks ( goats, soya, rice) ? I would love to hear your experiences.Thank you.

My dd was similar although the cows milk seemed to affect her digestion more than anything else.

I used goats milk in cooking for her, mainly in sauces and custards and things like that. It's quite a strong flavour though so didn't give it to her too often in a cup to drink.

I slowly re-introduced cows milk when she was about 3 or 4 and she's fine on it now.

Thanks MS, yes goats milk sounds good for cooking etc but it doenst have a particularly nice flavour/smell as a drink does it. He normally has a morning and bedtime bottle, and I would be happy to drop one of those but need something palatable for the bedtime milk. I was thinking of trying rice milk as someone of them are fortified with extra calcium.

We sometimes have vanilla flavoured rice milk and it's lovely. Nicer than soya I think as that can be a bit thick and gloopy.

Haven't checked the sugar content in that though. It might not be suitable for a bottle.

The alpro yoghurts are nice.

if it is just lactose intolerance rather than cows milk protein intolerance then why not try the lactofree milks? They are cows milk based but with the lactose broken down and they are suitable for people who are lactose intolerant. I have seen them in the chill with the goats milk, etc in the supermarket.

thanks Seona - have tried their milk and it was great - tasted the same as normal milk and Sainsburys had their yoghurts the other day. Anyone used rice milk or almond milk ?

I use rice milk on cereal and in cooking for my (15mo) DTs as one of them is allergic to cow's milk and a lot of dairy products. They both refuse it at night as a drink and so go to bed without milk but they have a BF first thing in the morning, so maybe it's just that they don't like to drink milk from a cup? I buy the calcium-added one and they both seem to like it. I drink it too actually as I'm not fond of cow's milk.

quite interesting

very interesting. In Thailand, if a mother cant breastfeed they give their babies coconut milk. Not the creamy thai curry stuff but the watery stuff you get from the centre of a coconut. Apparently it is stuffed full of all sorts of nutritional goodies.
