7 week old b/f baby distressed but not constipated - help please

My seven week old ds has been getting very distressed when he has a bowel movement on and off for the last week. He is not constipated, there is plenty of runny poo, but it is sometimes green instead of yellow. I am breast-feeding and have tried to be very careful with my feeding schedule so that he is getting enough hind milk. I can't identify anything that I am eating consistently that may be contributing to this. Does anyone have any advice please?

Ohsheesh - not sure what you mean by being careful with feeding schedule and hindmilk. Foremilk/hindmilk is not normally an issue and babies sort things out for themselves - just follow the baby's lead Only time you would want to 'intervene' would be if the baby is clearly battling with an over-generous milk supply, and then you might deliberately reduce your supply by 'block feeding' (check archives) and only using one breast at a time, over some hours.

Maybe this is happening with you though - is he gaining weight like the clappers and do you feel you have gallons of milk?

Green poo is on the normal spectrum, though it can be a feature of the 'gallons of milk' thing, too.

Being uncomfortable and distressed is something worth trying to fix - if it is to do with gallons of milk, then the 'block feeding' might be helpful.

Could he be straining? How is he manifesting his distress? DS makes various noises when he is having a poo, but not sure this is distress.... Probably just a new sensation...

He is straining, but he was doing that before. For the last week he has often been crying as well as straining, as if it is painful. I was thinking that maybe he is gassy when he has the green poo and this was causing him pain, which is why I've been trying to see if sorting out the green poo would help. From what I've read/heard this can be from too much fore milk, overfeeding or a gut infection. So confusing!

He is otherwise well apart from a slight cold. I'm not sure that I feel I have gallons of milk, but I will have a look into block feeding thanks tiktok.

I have also just tried cycling his legs which seems to relieve him.

Ohsheesh - don't try block feeding unless you want/need to reduce your milk supply...that's why it's done!
