Hi, dd2 is 12 days old and feeding very well. However in the last few days she has started to get really bad wind and seems to be in a lot of pain. Don't recall dd1 suffering like this. Surely it is not normal for a breastfed baby? Is there anything I can do for her?

my bf sons both have/had wind. you just basically have to wind them for ages. it's a drag.

some positions are more comfortable for them - e.g. tiger in the tree, sitting them up and not layingn them flat [i'm sure you know all this]

some people use infacol before feeds. didn't do much for my son but others swear by it.

Try Infacol, gripe water when she gets to 4 wks - we've given up on both but they help some people.

Rub her belly clockwise
Push her feet in to her tummy (knees to chest) and press (gently!)
Bicycle her legs
One hand under her bum and then hold her ankles and move them in big clockwise circles

  • think there are videos with this on youtube

PS do you have a fast let-down? Also check latch is creating a seal on yr boob.

My dd1 had this, also bf. Looking back, I should probably have done something about it, such as craniosteopathy, or even have asked the GP for medicine - I've known babies to have gaviscon.

Thanks everyone. Letdown doesn't seem to be a problem but I am working on the latch. I had a sore nipple for a few days because the latch was too shallow and sometimes I have to take her off and re-latch as she is incline to just grab the nipple. Maybe she is taking in air because of this.

4 weeks seems like a long time away. I presumed that you could give gripe water/Infacol from birth.

Sorry for being unclear - you can give Infacol from birth, it's gripe water you hav to wait for the 4 week mark.

Cranial osteopath helped her a lot, though not so much with the wind (she's grumpy and farting a lot this morning at 8 weeks). I am waiting for the magic 12 week point!

have - don't even have one-handed typing to blame this time!

Try and keep baby upright or 40'angle for about half hour after a feed.

I had a very windy baby and fennel tea used to help us - we made it up with:

half a teaspoon fennel seeds
one crushed black cardamom pod
a couple of cloves
one teaspoon of sugar

boil all that up then simmer for a few mins- add a decaf teabag for colour and put some milk in the pan (not into the mug) then strain...

sorry if it all seems a bit longwinded - its basically chai and is very tasty and did actually seem to help...

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 25/11/2008 17:59

we were shown a technique where you hold baby upright and squeeze their stomach to help, but get a medical professional to show you how rather than taking my instructions!!

we're on infacol which has helped a bit, am resorting to trying to cut dairy from my diet to see if that works, trying cranial osteopath on thurs and onto gripe water at the weekend (ds is very windy!)

thanks for alternative fennel tea recipe greatkatestacks - i hate normal fnnel tea so will give this a go

fledtoscotland · 25/11/2008 19:11

try dentinox colic drops suitable from birth. i have a fast let down and as a newborn ds2 struggled to keep up taking in loads of wind.

tostaky · 25/11/2008 19:38

Same problem here.. Bub is almost two weeks and i can hear noises in his poor little belly..

The midwife told us to use Infacol but it hasnt done anything... i might try again tonight though as today was particularly bad and i couldnt settle him after feeding.

I try to burp him every time too but it doesnt always work. Also the midwife told me to stop eating citrus fruits, pineapple, grapes and tomatoes.

I will try the fennel tea and i have been meaning to keep a food diary for myself and record the babys wind but i keep putting it off... I'll try the movements too, my mum swears by them

tostaky - i found infacol useless but dentinox really worked. he burped within about 5mins of having it. Initially i thought my diet was affecting DS2 but apart from caffine, ime you dont need to cut out certain foods like your MW suggested. I also bathed with DS2 when he was really upset and the warm water seemed to soothe him as well as lots of fab skin to skin contact
