BF 3 month old - Some questions...

Hi,

My 3 month old baby is exclusivly breastfed(largly down to support i received on this board.)

She feeds 5 - 6 times a day between when she wakes up in the morning and last feed at 11ish. Roughly every 3 hours for about 40 mins, her schedule not mine. She has no middle of the night feed any more.

Her sleep is very good and i am aware that i am lucky with this, hence the reason i am nervous about interfering with her self set routine.
I am just wondering how i would go about dropping the 11pm feed, i am not in a paticular hurry to do this but how does one know what it is the right time? Is she too young for it?

When you dropped it for your babies did they wake up at stupid o clock in the morning or just not miss it at all?

I have hardly any friends who are breastfeeding so i really don't know what to expect as she gets older and I kind of just plod along.

What were/are your experiences of breastfeeding a 3 month old.

As i said, i am not worried, more interested

Thanks for reading

she's far too young to be dropping feeds atm.
you're very lucky (as you say) that she sleeps so well. I definitely wouldn't interfere at all.

iirc when I was BFing DD she dropped this feed herself at around five or six months of age.

I would just take the lead from your DD and let her decide when she doesn't need it any more

Thank you for your replies, i will leave well alone for now. LeakyDAISYcal, sending sympathy for the sleep deprivation xxx

I just keep repeating "this too shall pass". It helps!!

leakydaisycal, I probably shouldn't mention that my 1 yr old still doesn't sleep 11-6?? lol

LeakyDAISYcal · 24/11/2008 21:12

Noooooooooooooooo!!!!!

actually this is DC3, and the first two were great sleepers from a few weeks old. We think we have drawn the short straw this time round, but his gorgeousness makes up for it

thisisyesterday · 24/11/2008 21:13

hehe yes I had a great sleeper the first time round.
it is a good job they are so lovely isn't it?

LeakyDAISYcal · 24/11/2008 21:15

indeed

agree with others with a 11 mth bf dd2 who still wakes throught the night!
DD1 dropped this herself but later than 3 mth ! Enjoy the sleep

My DS dropped the 10pm feed at 16 weeks. He would wake for it at about 8pm instead. He would feed at 7pm after his bath, go to sleep then wake at 8pm-ish, feed again then sleep till the morning.

My DD dropped the 10pm feed at six and a bit months, after starting solids.

They were both exclusively BFed until they started on solids at 22 weeks.

stickybean · 24/11/2008 21:58

The thing is she doesn't wake up for an 11pm feed, i just pick her up and give it to her, and she sleeps and eats (alright for some!)

I guess the fact that she does eat means she still needs it though? As i said, i am more than happy to carry on just wondering how i will know when to give it up.

I have a 10 month old and I am still giving her a feed at 10.30pm - she doesn't wake for it I just pick her up and she feeds in her sleep. I think with my DS (if I remember correctly) I stopped the night feed at around 10-11 months because I stopped Bfing altogether at a year old. With DD I'm just not thinking about dropping this feed - guess I don't want to risk her waking at stupid o'clock either! Seems easier to just do it.
If you do want to drop it you certainly should wait a few more months, after solids have been established. Sounds like you're doing really well.

You can always drop it one night and see how she goes. If she wakes in the night, just go back to the dream feed the next night. But I'd say she is unlikely to go all night without it at this age.
