How can I wean ds off top-ups?

DS is just coming up to 5 weeks and we've really struggled with latch (had the same with dd-- don't seem to be any further forward this time around), but seem to be getting there at last. However, he's been having a big feed late at night, after which he won't settle, but won't go back on the boob. (He either crotchets or falls asleep there, but wakes up and yells if I try to put him down) So I've been topping him up with a few ounces of formula or EBM in the bottle, after which he generally settles. He does seem to be genuinely hungry but if he is, why can't I get him to go on the boob? And if not, any advice as to how I can get him to settle without the bottle?

Are you feeding him off both sides? If not have you tried offering him the other side? Have you treid lying down while feeding him & then quietly slipping away?
Do you wait for their fingers to uncurl before putting him down? This is supposed to mean they are in a pretty deep sleep.
Sorry seems like I have asked a load of questions!

Thanks cheese, ds started tuning up just as I finished posting on Thursday and I haven't made it back online since!

Basically our evenings go like this: he feeds on and off over the course of the evening, has a long feed on one side and seems to drop off around midnight. I take him upstairs and try to put him down and he wakes up and yells. I feed him on the other side, burp him, he seems to drop off, try to put him down, he yells. Try him on the first side, he just falls asleep without really latching on, but yells whenever I try to put him down. I can't do this routine infinitely as I start getting very sore so at around 2 I give up and give him the bottle.

It's just frustrating because during the day it's mostly fairly routine feed-burp-sleep but he seems to be very wakeful at night.

Haven't heard the thing about the hands before-- I do wait a bit before trying to put him down but I'll try looking out for that.

Is it possible that it could be something else thats causing it?

cluster feeding and fussy evenings

fussing or crying during nursing
